INEC’s 2023 Election Glitches Raise Fresh Questions Over Accountability
Nigeria’s 2023 general elections continue to attract attention over technical problems that affected the uploading of presidential election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal.
In its official report released in February 2024, INEC acknowledged difficulties with uploading polling-unit result sheets following the February 25, 2023 presidential election.
The commission attributed the problems to a configuration error, server responses, heavy system traffic, and delays in processing queued results. It said software fixes were deployed to address the issue.
The incident generated widespread criticism and raised questions about transparency, technical preparedness, and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Although INEC maintained that the glitches did not undermine the election’s credibility, the controversy remains an important lesson for future elections.
The specific allegation that INEC has accused its staff of causing the glitches should be confirmed against the original statement or report before being presented as established fact.
