ENUGU AUXILIARY BISHOP, OBODO, CONFERS SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION ON 983 CANDIDATES

The Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Ernest Obodo, conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation on 983 candidates earlier today, in one of the largest single-day confirmations in the diocese’s recent history.

The Mass, held at Holy Ghost Cathedral Enugu, was attended by thousands of candidates, parishioners, clergy, and families from across the diocese. Each parish and institution in the diocese sent two candidates to be confirmed in a gesture that bespeaks inclusivity.

In his homily, Bishop Obodo described the large number of confirmands as a sign that “God is working in the diocese” and “bringing His own people.” He emphasized the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, reminding the newly confirmed that the laying on of hands marked the beginning of a spiritual journey guided by God’s presence.

‎Referencing a recent incident involving a suspected ritualist in Umumba Ndiagu, Ezeagu Local Government Area, Bishop Obodo condemned the growing obsession with money and reiterated that “every evil has an expiry date.”

‎“The Holy Spirit is our ultimate comforter. He removes the heart of stone and gives us a new spirit , transforming us into new creations,” he said. “Though we may not see Him, we feel His impact. Like wind and fire, the Spirit purifies, sanctifies, and strengthens us.”

‎He further urged the candidates to embrace the language of love, which he said is the core of the Holy Spirit’s work. “The Holy Spirit teaches, convicts, and leads us to truth. He awakens our conscience and calls us to live according to God’s will,” the bishop added.

‎Highlighting the role of the Church, Bishop Obodo stated that “the Catholic Church holds the deposit of truth,” and that Jesus Christ remains the greatest teacher, having taught through both parables and personal example.

‎He concluded by encouraging the candidates to allow the Holy Spirit to guide their lives, reminding them that the fruits of the Spirit, including wisdom, goodness, and self-discipline will manifest when they yield to God’s direction.

‎The sacrament was administered with the support of several priests who assisted during the rite of confirmation.
The nearly 1,000 candidates — ranging in age from teenagers to adults — had undergone periods of catechesis and spiritual preparation in their home parishes. Many expressed joy and a sense of purpose following the liturgy.
