The National Assembly has officially transmitted the landmark Bill for the establishment of State Police Services to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his assent.

The transmission comes on the heels of a decisive constitutional breakthrough, with 29 State Houses of Assembly voting to approve the proposed constitutional amendment.

The total surpasses the constitutional requirement of two-thirds majority (24 out of 36 state assemblies) needed to alter the 1999 Constitution.

The announcement was formally made during Wednesday’s plenary session by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, who read an official notice from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.

According to the notice, the required tally was secured at the close of business on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

“This is to inform Distinguished Senators that as at the close of business yesterday, the Office of the Clerk to the National Assembly has received a post from 29 State Houses of Assembly on the Bill to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 to provide for the establishment of State Police Services and for related matters,” the notice stated.

“Consequently, the leadership of the National Assembly has directed the Clerk to the National Assembly to transmit the Bill today, Wednesday, the 4th day of November 2026, to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for assent.”

If signed into law, the bill will pave the way for individual states to establish and operate their own police forces.

The long-debated reform is widely seen as a crucial measure to decentralize policing, enhance local intelligence gathering, and bolster the country’s response to security challenges nationwide.
