Nigerians have rejected the reported appointment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi, wife of political figure Segun Showunmi, as Director of Electoral Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that the move could be part of a plot to rig the 2027 general election in favour of Bola Ahmed Tinubu..

The controversy follows reports that Adeyemi-Showunmi was redeployed from her position as Administrative Secretary at INEC’s Lagos office to head the Electoral Operations Department at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Critics have questioned the decision, pointing to her husband’s political activities and his support for Tinubu’s re-election ambition despite his association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The appointment has raised concerns among critics who fear that political interests could influence the management of the 2027 elections.

They have called for transparency over the decision and demanded explanations about the criteria used to select the new director.

The Electoral Operations Department is responsible for key aspects of election preparation and implementation, including the coordination of electoral materials, polling arrangements and operational activities. Its role makes the leadership of the department particularly important ahead of the 2027 general election.

The controversy comes amid wider public scrutiny of INEC’s appointments and redeployments as political parties and their supporters prepare for the next presidential election

Critics are demanding that INEC explain the circumstances surrounding the reported appointment and demonstrate that its electoral operations will remain impartial and independent of political influence.

At this rate, Otunba Segun Showumi may politically self-destruct in his quest to fumigate and sanitize Tinubu’s presidential mission. His zeal for purification, though noble, risks alienating allies and eroding his own political base.
