The Federal Government has taken a major step towards the actualisation of the Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Ako-Nike, Enugu State, with the deployment of a high-powered team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to assess the permanent site of the proposed institution.

The development has heightened expectations among stakeholders in Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency and across Enugu State that the long-awaited university will soon move from legislative approval to physical development and eventual academic take-off.

The assessment team, led by the Director of Universities Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Kareem Olawale Lateef, is expected to arrive Enugu on Sunday and commence the site assessment at Ako-Nike on Monday.

Before proceeding to the project site, the delegation is expected to pay a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah, at the Government House.

Sources within the Federal Ministry of Education said the visit forms part of the standard procedures for the establishment of a new federal university and is intended to determine the suitability of the land allocated for the institution, as well as assess other requirements necessary for its development.

The outcome of the exercise is expected to pave the way for subsequent stages of the project, including the commencement of infrastructure development and other preparations required for the eventual take-off of the university.

The Federal University of Agriculture and Developmental Studies, Ako-Nike, was approved by the Federal Government in the last quarter of 2025 following Presidential assent to the Bill establishing the institution. Monitoring Federal Directives

The legislation was sponsored by Hon. Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi, member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, who had consistently advocated the establishment of a specialised institution capable of addressing the agricultural and developmental needs of the constituency and the wider region.

The proposed university is expected to play a strategic role in transforming agriculture in Enugu State by combining tertiary education with research, innovation, technology and practical agricultural development.

Enugu East/Isi-Uzo is predominantly agrarian, with thousands of residents depending directly or indirectly on farming and related activities for their livelihoods.

With the establishment of the institution, stakeholders believe the area could benefit from increased agricultural research, improved farming techniques, technology transfer, agro-processing initiatives and the development of a new generation of professionally trained agricultural entrepreneurs.

Beyond education, the university is also expected to contribute to employment generation, stimulate economic activity around Ako-Nike and adjoining communities, and create a new institutional hub for agricultural innovation in the South-East.

Reacting to the latest development, Professor Nnamchi expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for giving Presidential assent to the legislation and approving the establishment of the university.

He described the institution as a potentially transformative project for Enugu East/Isi-Uzo, particularly because of the predominantly agrarian character of the constituency.

Nnamchi said the university would provide a platform for specialised agricultural education and research while helping to optimise the enormous agricultural potential of the people.

He also commended Governor Peter Mbah for his support, particularly the prompt approval of the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) for the parcel of land allocated for the institution.

The lawmaker noted that the availability of the land and the Governor’s cooperation had helped remove one of the major administrative hurdles that could have slowed down the establishment process.

Nnamchi equally praised the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and officials of the Ministry for maintaining momentum on the project since its approval.

He expressed confidence that the latest assessment exercise would further accelerate the process and bring the university to Ako Nike.
