NATASHA-AKPABIO SAGA: PETER EXPRESSES DEEP CONCERN

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, has expressed deep concern over the growing focus on trivial issues while the nation continues to grapple with severe challenges.

In a tweet on his X handle on Sunday, he pointed out that Nigeria is facing the highest levels of poverty, rising infant mortality rates, and millions of out-of-school children, yet the political leadership seems fixated on controversies like budget padding, sexual harassment allegations, and state-level power struggles.

Obi called out the government for prioritizing these distractions over addressing the urgent needs of the Nigerian people.

He said, “The national discourse is consumed by trivialities, whether it is allegations of sexual harassment or budget padding in the National Assembly, controversies surrounding State Houses of Assembly speakership, reckless Court judgments threatening to destabilize or deprive the State of funding to provide needed services to the citizens.”

The focus on such issues, Obi argued, distracts from the real problems facing the country, such as escalating insecurity, hunger, and widespread poverty.

He criticized the political leadership for failing to tackle the root causes of these issues.

Obi’s tweet is coming after the sexual harassment allegation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which emerged during an interview with Arise News TV.

While such allegations are serious, Obi suggested that they should not overshadow the national discourse that should be centered on solutions to Nigeria’s most pressing problems.

Obi also expressed disappointment with the behavior of Nigeria’s three arms of government—the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.

He labeled the actions of the current leadership as disgraceful and uninspiring, pointing to incidents such as the executive’s overreach in Osun State and the troubling judiciary decisions in Rivers State.

These, he argued, threaten not only democracy but also the stability needed for Nigeria to thrive.

“What is coming out of the three arms of government, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary is disgusting and uninspiring.

The Executive show of negative power as seen in Osun state, the reckless Judiciary pronouncement on Rivers State that is capable of threatening democracy plus the embarrassing scandal from the National Assembly all combine to give a gloomy picture of our democratic journey,” Obi said.
