I READ LAW TO PROVIDE FREE LEGAL SERVICES TO THE VOICELESS – CATHOLIC PRIEST

The Spiritual Director of Okunerere Adoration Ministry, Nsukka, Enugu State, Rev Fr. Prof. Paul Obayi, Monday said he read law to provide legal services pro bono to the voiceless in society.

Fr. Obayi, a professor of New Media and Development Communication, said he had always dreamt of becoming a lawyer and thanked God for seeing him through the rigours of law school.

Quoting him, “God is a lawyer. Jesus is a lawyer. The Holy Spirit is a lawyer. Who has asked Jesus any question and won him? When he was asked about writing, he started writing.

“People began to wonder if he went to school. When he was asked the power he operates with, he asked them by whose powers their sons operate.

“Jesus said when I leave you, I will send you an advocate. I’m now an advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“My mentor is St. Paul. He was highly learned. Peter wrote one book through Mark. Paul wrote 13 epistles. Jude wrote only one. Paul is a disciple of Gamaliel, the teacher of law. So Paul is a lawyer.

“My name is Paul. There is no part of the world I have not toured. In Nsukka, there is no community that I haven’t gone to.”

On whether he is a controversial priest, Barr Obayi said, “Being controversial depends. I am a gentleman. I don’t make trouble. But what will I do when I am confronted?
Whatever confronts me becomes my age mate. When it comes, you stay to resolve it either through boxing or dialogue.

“We try to register our rights. If it is a privilege, let us know. If it is intimidation, allow us to yawn for the world to hear. We are systematic and respectful. We try at times to assert that this is our right; it is not a privilege. Many don’t know we know the law to address some things.

“However, there are areas we try to operate in the spirit In some cases, if it is the right of the Spirit that is trampled upon. He will then act using us. People might think we are the ones that are acting. If I operate in the spirit, like during delivery, you won’t understand.

“The Devil is not a gentleman. God is a gentleman. The Holy Spirit is brought to match the devil’s madness.”

Fr. Obayi is the chief exorcist of the Nsukka Diocese of the Catholic Church.

    WORKS MINISTER, UMAHI, ORDERS IMMEDIATE DISMANTLING OF SPEED BUMPS ON FEDERAL HIGHWAYS The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed all Federal Controllers of Works to dismantle all speed calming devices/measures (speed breakers or bumps) on federal highways in their respective states. The minister issued the directive during the opening of a two-day retreat organised for highways engineers and management staff of the works ministry. The retreat held in Abuja was themed, “Ensuring Delivery of Mr President’s Agenda on Road Infrastructural Development.” Umahi said while there was nothing wrong with installing such bumps, there should be approval and standard designs and specifications to guide such efforts. The directive contained in a communique issued after the retreat read, “The minister has directed the enforcement of speed bumps removal nationwide in compliance with the directive of the National Assembly as well as stoppage of use of road shoulders for trading and drying wares. “He directed all Federal Controllers of Works to dismantle all speed calming devices/measures (speed breakers or bumps) on federal highways in their respective states, and going forward there should be approval and standard design and specifications guiding such endeavours.” Umahi also reiterated that a robust road network is vital for achieving food security, eradicating poverty, improving security, fostering economic growth, and creating jobs. A statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, on Monday, outlined the government’s commitment to reconstructing and rehabilitating deteriorating highways across the country to strengthen road infrastructure. According to Umahi, the current administration’s massive infrastructural development across the six geo-political zones is aimed at stimulating the economy and improving the quality of life for Nigerians. The statement read in part: “One of the objectives of the retreat is to address lapses observed during the minister’s field visits to various project sites across the six geo-political zones.” Umahi added that the retreat was designed to enhance service delivery, efficiency, and collaboration in delivering road projects nationwide, ensuring value for money on all government initiatives. He encouraged participants, particularly the ministry’s supervisory staff, to maximise the retreat’s benefits to improve their technical capabilities, expressing optimism that it would enable them to support the delivery of the President’s eight-point agenda. The minister compared the effects of poor roads to imprisoning citizens, as it hinders movement, and called on highway engineers to adopt internationally recommended engineering standards and practices to achieve the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He directed contractors to mobilise to project sites before requesting mobilisation fees. He also pledged to institutionalise capacity-building exercises for engineers to enhance service delivery. In a goodwill message, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Works, Olufunsho Adebiyi, thanked the ministers for their dedication and urged them to focus on improving service delivery in the road sector.
