SINS OF SIMON EKPA, THE SO-CALLED BIAFRA PRIME MINISTER IN EXILE

The arrest of Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE), by Finnish authorities last Thursday has reignited questions about his controversial role in the Biafra agitation movement.

Born on March 21, 1985, in Ohaukwu, Ebonyi State, Ekpa has emerged as a polarising figure within the ongoing struggle for Biafra’s secession.

His activities have drawn accusations from various quarters, including the Nigerian government, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and civil society groups.

Ekpa faces allegations of inciting violence in the southeast region of Nigeria. His faction has been accused of financing and coordinating attacks carried out by unknown gunmen and armed groups responsible for widespread unrest in Igboland.

The IPOB, under whose umbrella Ekpa initially rose to prominence, has distanced itself from him, accusing him of manipulating and coercing followers, engaging in cult-like practices, and mismanaging funds intended for the organisation.

The Nigerian government has also linked Ekpa to terrorism, alleging that he has been financing violent activities in the southeast and promoting secessionist violence.

Officials claim he has been instrumental in encouraging attacks attributed to unknown gunmen, further destabilising the region.

Following the killings in the South-East by unknown gunmen and inciting statements by Ekpa, in 2023, Kanu had to write a letter from detention, telling Ekpa to stop issuing sit-at-home orders in the region.

Kanu, in a handwritten letter to Ekpa, asked the agitator to make a public announcement acknowledging receipt of the order from him.

Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to Kanu, posted copies of the handwritten letter from the IPOB leader on his verified Twitter handle.

The letter read: “Simon (Ekpa), this is a direct order from me. I hereby instruct you to desist from calling for any sit-at-home henceforth.

“Equally refrain from antagonising governors or persons in political positions because you are not in a position to know what they are doing on my behalf.

“I am ordering you to make a public announcement to the effect that you are in receipt of a direct order from me to cancel any pending or future sit-at-home order at the moment.

“I embarked on this movement to liberate our people, not to enslave them. I despise and will despise any person or entity that wishes to inflict unnecessary hardship on our people.

“I have authorised Aloy (Ejimakor) to issue a press statement if you fail to make this announcement on your platform.”

But a defiant Ekpa dismissed the letter, describing it as the handiwork of ‘’Islamic SSS.’’

“As the prime minister of Biafra under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I call on all Biafrans to disregard the fake letter coming from the SSS. We can’t take any order from the Islamic SSS and that is final,” Ekpa said.

    AS SIMON EKPA COMES TO JUDGEMENT Simon Ekpa, the self-styled leader of the Biafra secessionist movement, appears to be facing his long-overdue reckoning following his arrest by the Finnish government on allegations of terrorism. Ekpa has consistently stirred the hornet’s nest for years with his incendiary remark and actions, so much so that his name has become synonymous with terror in the once peaceful and thriving southeastern region of Nigeria. Ekpa rose to prominence after the erstwhile leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria to face justice under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. Like Kanu, Ekpa’s leadership and influence enabled the perpetration of a cycle of violence and instability that has made lives nasty, brutish and short (Apologies to Thomas Hobbes). Even now, following his arrest, IPOB has emerged to distance itself from Simon Ekpa, vehemently denying any affiliation with him and declaring that he was never a member of the group, let alone its leader. Whether this claim is believable remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: Ekpa’s self-proclaimed sit-at-home orders, enforced through fear and brutality, have crippled the region’s economy and inflicted unimaginable suffering on the people he claims to represent. Schools, markets, and businesses have been forced to close, and innocent lives have been lost—all in the name of a misguided agitation for independence. Ekpa was reportedly appointed to oversee the affairs of Radio Biafra following Kanu’s arrest in June 2021. However, after being dismissed from the role, he formed his own faction. From that point onward, Ekpa began issuing orders, including the controversial sit-at-home directives, which IPOB’s leadership has publicly and repeatedly disavowed. This faction, led by Ekpa, has been linked to escalating violence in the region, including attacks on security forces and the destruction of public property. Recently, Ekpa declared himself the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE) and oversaw the formation of an armed group called the ‘Biafra Liberation Army.’ What Ekpa and his followers fail to grasp is that justice cannot be built on a foundation of injustice and blind brutality. There is no strategy for agitation more self-defeating than one that amounts to cutting off your nose to spite your face. Throughout history, true leadership has required accountability and a commitment to the welfare of one’s people, rather than the reckless perpetuation of fear and violence. This is something Simon Ekpa fundamentally failed to understand—until his recent arrest. The consequences of IPOB’s activities are staggering. A recent report estimates that sit-at-home orders and violence have cost the southeastern economy over ₦5 trillion in lost productivity over the past two years. Small businesses, which form the backbone of the region’s economy, have borne the brunt of the crisis, with thousands closing their doors permanently. Education has also been severely disrupted, with countless children missing significant periods of schooling due to fear of attacks. Healthcare systems, already strained, have seen delays in critical services as movement is restricted on declared sit-at-home days. Now, Simon Ekpa has come to judgement—not equity. For he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. Ekpa’s hands are stained with the blood of innocent Nigerians in southeastern Nigeria. At the height of his reign, as stated earlier, he declared himself “Prime Minister” and created an office—a position he later denied in a Finnish court. Imagine a king denying his kingdom! What manner of “Prime Minister” is this? If Simon Ekpa were Moses, I doubt he would have been able to lead his people to the promised land. This is someone who was almost running a parallel government from Finland, barking orders to his foot soldiers at home, who wreaked havoc at will.…

    Some Nigerians in Finland are in panic following the arrest and detention of separatist leader, Simon Ekpa. Ekpa is one of the leaders of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra. According to sources, Nigerians in the European country are afraid of commenting on the arrest of the suspect over fear of being attacked. A Nigerian community leader, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, noted that the Igbo community was “gravely affected” by the violent acts of the secessionist group. He said, “Everyone is afraid to speak about Ekpa’s arrest. The key people in Finland and the Igbo community at large are not ready to lend their voices either.” The source noted that some persons were being accused of reporting Ekpa to the police and were being threatened. “A particular person they accused now, they’re after him. This happened before he (Ekpa) was even remanded—what will happen when they imprison him? Everyone is afraid. These people are very deadly,” the source said. Another resident, who also asked not to be identified, said there was tension among Nigerians in the country. “People don’t want to speak about Ekpa for fear of being hunted by his followers. We believe that they will hunt whoever comes out to talk about their leader. But the Finnish Government is trying to get rid of the situation.” Ekpa’s arrest Ekpa was arrested alongside four others on Thursday by Finnish authorities on suspicion of terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. Checks revealed that his X handle (@simon_ekpa) had been inactive for four days. Ekpa, who describes himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, is accused of using social media to promote violent activities in southeastern Nigeria, including attacks on civilians and the authorities. He was first arrested in February 2023 for inciting comments and sit-at-home orders to the people of the South-East. The suspect gained international notoriety for his calls to boycott Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, which were enforced through violent means, contributing to attacks on residents. Before his arrest, Ekpa had attracted global attention, with thousands of Nigerians worldwide petitioning the Finnish and Nigerian governments, as well as the European Union, to take action against his disruptive activities. In response, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Leena Pylvanainen, urging Finland to cooperate in addressing Ekpa’s threats. A local publication in Finland, Yle noted that the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation acted on the reports by detaining Ekpa and later releasing him. The Finnish police also confirmed that Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin, and four of his accomplices were arrested as part of an international investigation. A report stated that the District Court of Päijät-Häme, Finland, ordered Ekpa’s remand in prison, “with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.” The police stated that the main suspect, Ekpa, was arrested “on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” while four unnamed accomplices were arrested “for financing a terrorist crime.” A Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Mikko Laaksonen, confirmed via email to Saturday PUNCH that further details about the suspects couldn’t be disclosed. Laaksonen explained that “NBI Finland cannot confirm the name of the suspect(s).
