TAX REFORM BILLS: GOVS THREATENING TO DENY US RETURN TICKETS – REPS DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has disclosed the readiness of the lawmakers to support President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills despite opposition from State Governors.

According to Agbese, some of the Governors have threatened to deny lawmakers from their states the 2027 return ticket if they throw their weight behind the tax bill.

He, however, said they are not bothered by such threats as they were elected to represent the people of their constituents and not to dance to the tune of the Governors.

On why the lawmakers have chosen to support President Tinubu, Agbese disclosed their belief that the bill is for the good of the people.

President Tinubu had in September, forwarded four executive bills on tax reforms to the National Assembly for consideration. However, the Governors, through the National Economic Council (NEC), called for the withdrawal of the bills for more consideration and input.

The President, however, refused to withdraw the bills, stating that inputs could still be made while the bills remain before the lawmakers.

The bills forwarded based on the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms headed by Taiwo Oyedele are the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, which is expected to provide the fiscal framework for taxation in the country, the Tax Administration Bill, which will provide a clear and concise legal framework for all taxes in the country and reduce disputes, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, which will repeal the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and establish the Nigeria Revenue Service, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, which will create a tax tribunal and a tax ombudsman.

Agbese disclosed that despite the opposition from the Governors, the lawmakers are ready to support President Tinubu in actualizing the bills.

He said, “As far as we are concerned in the House of Representatives, nobody can stop us from supporting President Bola Tinubu from rebooting the economy to work for the country.

“We are united across party lines to make sure the country works. This is the disposition of Speaker Tajudeen Abass.”

“Some of these governors are threatening members from their states. They have even gone far to threaten that they would deny members a return ticket in 2027 if they support the bills.”

Going scriptural, Agbese quoted Isaiah 54:15, saying, “Behold, they shall surely gather, but not by me. Whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.”

He emphasized that the loyalty of the lawmakers in the 10th Assembly is to their constituent members.

“The difference between the new crops of politicians in the House of Representatives is that we are intellectually sound, progressively-minded, and pro-Nigeria.

“We were not elected by the governors but our constituents, and as far as the legislation (bills) will work for those that elected us, we will support it unequivocally, wholeheartedly, and powerfully to see the light of the day.”

The lawmaker added that copies of the bills have been made available to legislators to aid their understanding ahead of the second reading, predicting that it would be passed with necessary amendments.

“We have made the bills available to every lawmaker to study, dissect, and make inputs when we bring them up for debate,” he stated, adding that the proposed legislation is likely to scale through but with some amendments where necessary.

“I see the 10th House passing the bills with some minor adjustments to polish it with a touch of patriotism and intellectualism.

“That’s our usual trademark when you have a teacher leading a parliament anywhere in the world,” he added.

BISHOP KUKAH TUTORS TINUBU’S SPOKESPERSONS ON COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES; ITS NOT ABOUT INSULTING PEOPLE Founder of The Kukah Centre, Bishop Mathew Kukah, has emphasized the need for better communication strategies from President Bola Tinubu’s Spokespersons, urging them to focus on effectively conveying the government’s message rather than resorting to insults or dismissing differing opinions.Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Kukah called on the administration to engage Nigerians constructively, especially during a time of widespread poverty and economic hardship. He stressed that clear communication is essential for reassuring the public and fostering patience as the government works through its proposed reforms. Bishop Kukah said, “What I can say is that this government must respond urgently to the issues of the day. They are issues of massive impoverishment in Nigeria. You can see the frustration on the faces of people, husbands, wives and children. “I am convinced that this government has lofty ideas, but there is a total absence of a constructive strategy of engagement.” He urged government officials to communicate effectively, stating, “This government needs communication strategies. The Nigerian government needs to convince Nigerians that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and encourage them to be a little patient. “I see the conversation around local government autonomy, tax reform bills and others. But the government has to communicate with the people. So when people call themselves government spokespersons- it is not about insulting people, or thinking others can’t have different views. But their job is how the ideas of the government are communicated. We need to have an idea of the government reforms. “We are happy to hear of the return of Port Harcourt Refinery. And the government needs to tell people what and what to expect at so-so time.” Bishop Kukah also cautioned against the government’s tendency to blame predecessors for current challenges. “By now, Nigerians are tired of hearing the government saying “we didn’t think things were this bad”. They must have had an idea of what was going on before contesting. So, when they say we have $30 million in our reserves. They should know the money should increase before they leave office. People come into government to solve problems and not to compound them. And you must have round pegs in round holes. “Government must not take the loyalty of people for granted. Winning elections isn’t about getting into power and then waiting to win another one,” he added.

UPROAR IN HOUSE OF REPS OVER TAX REFORM BILLS

UPROAR IN HOUSE OF REPS OVER TAX REFORM BILLS There was a shouting match among members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday over President Bola Tinubu’s controversial Tax Reform Bills. Tempers flared when the House spokesperson and Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee, Akin Rotimi, made a remark concerning the tax bills. The commotion began when Rotimi, standing in for the absent Committee Chair, Boma Goodhead, attempted to present a report on Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring. Rotimi said: “My name is Akin Rotimi Jr. I represent the people of Ekiti North comprising Ikole and Oye Local Governments. Mr. Speaker, I am from Ekiti State, the first state whose National Assembly Caucus has unanimously endorsed the tax bills.” His remark led to an uproar, with lawmakers vocally opposing the statement and chanting “No, No, No!” Intervening, the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, said Rotimi’s remark should not be taken seriously. The Speaker cautioned him, saying: “Restrict yourself to the subject matter. We are not discussing tax bills, as this is a very controversial issue. On your behalf, I withdraw the statement.” Rotimi apologized and retracted his comment, but the lawmakers remained dissatisfied. They demanded he step down the report entirely. Yielding to pressure, Rotimi conceded, saying: “I seek the leave of the Speaker and honourable members to step down the report.”
