INEC ANNOUNCES APC’S MONDAY OKPEBHOLO AS WINNER OF EDO GUBER ELECTION
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024.
Results were announced from all 18 local government areas, with a total of 2.2 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected across 4,519 polling units.
Key contenders included Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
Throughout the election process, allegations of irregularities emerged.
A PDP agent called for the suspension of the election, citing discrepancies in results.
As of the latest updates, the APC led with significant margins in several local government areas, while the PDP reported concerns over vote counting and called for a review of results before any official declaration.
According to Channels Television, the party’s state chairman indicated that figures from INEC’s iREV platform did not align with local results.
The PDP Governors’ Forum has urged INEC to respect the voters’ wishes, highlighting threats to democracy under the current APC administration.
Meanwhile, security measures were heightened at INEC collation centers amidst protests and allegations of vote-buying and thuggery.
The election result has been described by Ighodalo as potentially the “worst in Nigeria’s history,” raising concerns about electoral integrity moving forward.
