EDO APC GUBER CAMPAIGN MEDIA DIRECTOR UPBRADES ARISE TV’S ANCHORS, ABATI, RUFAI OVER ALLEGED PARTISANSHIP
The media director of the All-Progressives Congress, APC Campaign Council, Kassim Afegbua, has taken umbrage at the perceived “high-handed journalistic irresponsibility and verbal recklessness” displayed by anchor of the Arise News Morning Show, and former presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, when he hosted the Edo State Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress, APC, Jarret Tenebe.
Afegbua said Abati also goofed as a journalist when he hosted Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in the September 21 governorship election in the state when he exhibited preference for Ighodalo and Governor Obaseki, “having run election under the same platform as them”.
He said Abati erred “in thinking that even on TV, as a host, he can carry out that duty, jettisoning the code and codex of journalistic ethics, just to protect the interest of the PDP”.
In a statement on Saturday entitled ‘Reuben Abati, Arise TV and Their Shenanigans, Afegbua said Abati, as a card-carrying member of the PDP who ran election in 2019 for Deputy Governor with Buruji Kashamu, (in Ogun State) did not just stop at taking sides against the candidate of the APC when he hosted Tenebe, the chairman of the party, he said he “sardonically asked the chairman to invite the APC candidate to feature on his programme adding that even if the APC candidate spoke only Benin or Esan language, they would still be happy to have him”.
Taking a swipe at Abati, Afegbua argued that “If fluency in English language is all that is required to sail through political contestation, Abati would not have failed electorally when he contested. This deliberate act to deride and undermine our candidate to suit the bulbous ego of your preferred candidate will not sail. Edo voters will determine who leads them on the 21st of September 2024.
Insisting that Arise TV never extended a formal invitation to his party’s candidate, Afegbua, a former commissioner for information in the state, posited that in saner societies, guests feature on programs at the behest of the host, “not on the basis of sassy remarks”, adding that “Impetuous Reuben Abati unfortunately, has hastily concluded that Senator Monday Okpebholo is slaloming around his show”, which he said was incorrect, “rather, it is Abati who has clearly exhibited himself as specious and partisan”.
According to Afegbua, “Apropos of Senator Monday Okpebholo’s invitation to Arise TV, if Arise TV wishes to interview him, all they need do is invite him; and properly at that. Arise TV and her producer of The Morning Show have never invited the APC candidate for any interview. As a spokesman for the APC Campaign in Edo, I am sure that nobody has invited him directly, through me, or through any other recognized medium respectfully, to discuss the upcoming elections, on any of the television’s programs.
“Abati should not sit in judgement as an anchor, or verbally invite a candidate through the candidate’s opponent as he did on Monday, 26 August when Asue Ighodalo featured on his show. That Reuben Abati made snide remarks about the APC’s candidate in such a hare-brained, reckless and remiss manner is irresponsible and unwise of him, and unfortunate for the profession.
“It is clearly emblematic of his partisanship. His remarks watered down his already apathetic invitation leaving it tantamount to no invitation. We have our wits about us and will not capitulate to anything beneath our honour. It is beneath Senator Monday’s honour to respond to that sham and insult”.
Afegbua asserted that Senator Monday Okpebholo, who Abati attempted to denigrate, “is versed in the matters of Edo State and people, and his acceptance across the entire state is vast; I dare say cosmic in size!”
While stating that the APC candidate had been campaigning across the state, using English as his language of communication, and has got resounding approbation from all across the state without needing to ingratiate himself with the people via petty gifts and meals like some others are doing, Afegbua said “his works, and even his aura and deportment have endeared him to his people.
“He is fit and proper for the job of Governor and has all that it takes to take Edo State and people to higher heights. He is no asymptote who aims to employ sophistry, demagoguery, and artifice to put Edo people on a treadmill or a “one chance” life for four to eight years, not even scratching the surface of their needs – no! He is a man with drive and vision; a man with mental and physical models of the station where he wants Edo to be. He is a go getter; he has been doing things and will continue to do things; and you can take that to the bank! He is an action man.
“Arise TV should stop all this journalistic gangsterism and just remain fair and balanced as a news medium. We decry, deprecate, and condemn in totality the impetuous and reckless attempts by Reuben Abati and Rufai Oseni as TV anchors, to take electioneering to the screen, by craftily denigrating and deriding a more preferred candidate, in a bid to funnel the people towards the candidate of their choice”.

BREAKING: TINUBU SWEARS-IN IBAS AS RIVERS SOLE ADMINISTRATOR

BREAKING: TINUBU SWEARS-IN IBAS AS RIVERS SOLE ADMINISTRATOR President Bola Tinubu has sworn- in the sole administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.), into office. Tinubu swore Ibas into office at about 03:00 pm at the State House, Abuja. The brief ceremony was witnessed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the Principal Secretary to the President, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola. Ibas arrived at the Presidential Villa at about 12:48 pm (local time). On Tuesday night, Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months. In a national broadcast, Tinubu cited prolonged political instability, constitutional breaches, and security threats as reasons for the extraordinary measure. The crisis, which had paralysed governance in the oil-rich state, stems from a power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. As part of the directive, the President also appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas (retd.) as the sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs until normalcy is restored. Ibas served as Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Tinubu announced, “In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State the Governor and Deputy Governor of Rivers State has failed to make a request to me as President to issue this proclamation as required by section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, March 18, 2025 and I so do. “By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months. “In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd.) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State. For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance with their constitutional mandate.”

SOLDIERS HOLD FUBARA, FAMILY HOSTAGE IN RIVERS GOVT HOUSE

SOLDIERS HOLD FUBARA, FAMILY HOSTAGE IN RIVERS GOVT HOUSE Siminalayi Fubara, the elected governor of Rivers State, and his family members were reportedly being held hostage at the Government House, Port Harcourt by heavily armed soldiers Tuesday night. It was gathered that they were held hostage moments after President Bola Tinubu invoked Section 180 of the Nigerian Constitution to proclaim a state of emergency in Rivers. Tinubu based his move, which has been heavily criticised by many, including Ijaw groups and PANDEF, on a prolonged and rapidly escalating political feud led by state lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, who commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara last week to settle scores in his fallout with Wike. Peoples Gazette quoted Rivers government sources to have said that soldiers carrying out the president’s instructions on declaring the state of emergency barricaded all entrances and exits to the government house immediately after the president’s speech. According to the sources, attempts by Fubara and his family to pack their belongings out of the Government House have been rebuffed by the soldiers, who suppressed all movements around the premises. “We are being held hostage,” an affected official told The Gazette from the scene on Tuesday night. “They said they don’t have instruction to let anyone leave the premises.” It was unclear whether the soldiers implemented their duties as instructed or were overzealous in following specific orders. Spokespersons for the Nigerian Army and Defence Headquarters did not immediately return requests seeking comments about the soldiers’ treatment of the Fubara and his family. Tinubu’s declaration to suspend the feuding parties from office for six months, effective Tuesday, sparked furious debates across social media as netizens argued whether the president had constitutional grounds to suspend an elected governor whom the state lawmakers have not yet impeached. Efforts to impeach Fubara began on Monday, barely 24 hours before Mr Tinubu imposed an emergency ordinance. Lawyers like Inibehe Effiong and Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana have slammed the president for taking the law into his own hands without regard for the Constitution’s position. The president named the retired chief of naval staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as the military administrator in Rivers in the interim. South-South leaders, PANDEF condemn emergency rule Meanwhile, several South-South leaders and stakeholders have decried President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and impropriety of brazenly backing the Federal Capital Territory Minister against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state’s citizens According to the one-time Attorney General of Akwa Ibom State, Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN, the decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State was ill-advised. “The president’s action is not well thought out. The situation in Rivers State has not met any of the conditions prescribed by the constitution for the declaration of a state of emergency by the president. It falls short of it. “So the president’s action is ill-advised and not based on the provisions of the Constitution. For me, it is part of a script to take over the control of Rivers State, which they had already written and have been acting stage-by-stage and scene-by-scene.” Former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Eric Omare Esq., said: “President Tinubu took a wrong decision; I strongly condemn his one-sided action, and again, removing Governor Fubara won’t solve the problem.” “The President’s intervention in the Rivers State crisis has been one-sided. His actions and body language have encouraged the FCT Minister, Wike, to fuel the crisis up to this point. “If Governor Fubara is blamed for not doing enough to handle the situation, what has the president done in response to Wike’s unnecessary outbursts, which laid the foundation for the tension in the past week? “I think that an unbiased president should have called Wike to order…
