CONGREGANTS EXCHANGE BLOWS IN ABUJA CHURCH, DAMAGE PROPERTY

Church service abruptly ended at the United Methodist Church in the Durumi area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as congregants engaged in a serious fight.

The fight, which went on for hours, resulted in damage to some of the church’s property and required intervention from FCT command operatives to bring it under control.

Newsmen gathered that frantic efforts initially made by the police to stop the fight proved abortive until tear gas was released.

It was further gathered that the police locked the church, dismissed the members, and took some of the elders to the station for interrogation.

A church member, speaking anonymously to journalists, expressed displeasure over the conflict, saying that there had been a rift among the church elders concerning the decision to separate from their headquarters in the United States.

The member added that the conflict arose from the church headquarters legalizing practices that are foreign to Nigeria’s culture.

The member said, “Our headquarters is in America and they have legalized some practices that are not part of our culture. Some elders were of the view that we should pull out, and give the church another name. But another set of elders kicked against the move. This created a faction in the church. At a point, they wanted to go to court, but I cannot say why they did not end up going.

“Today, while addressing the church during the service, our pastor announced that they would be heading to the court and expressed his wish that the church remain with the headquarters. That was what instigated the fight. I have never seen such a thing before in my life. The fight was so serious that when the police came they did not stop until they fired teargas. Some of the church elders were taken to the station for interrogation after the whole thing. “

When contacted, the FCT Command Police Spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incidennt.

She added that the Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, had invited the church elders to his office on Monday.

Adeh said, “The CP has invited all the church elders to come to the command by 10 am on Monday, August 19.

YORUBA IMAMS REBEL AGAINST SULTAN OF SOKOTO, DECLARE MARCH 1 COMMENCEMENT OF RAMADAN The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has announced that Ramadan 1446 AH (2025) will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, departing from the traditional practice of waiting for the official declaration by the Sultan of Sokoto, who is regarded as the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims. In a communiqué issued by the Office of the Grand Mufti of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, the body stated that its decision was based on precise astronomical calculations and international Islamic conferences on lunar sighting. The statement cited multiple resolutions from Islamic jurisprudential councils, astronomical experts, and international conferences held in Istanbul, Paris, and within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). According to these, the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan will be visible after sunset on Friday, February 28, 2025, making March 1, 2025, the first day of fasting. The communiqué referenced the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Fast when you see the crescent and break your fast when you see it.” (Agreed upon by scholars). This announcement marks a significant shift from the long-standing practice in Nigeria, where the Sultan of Sokoto typically announces the start and end of Ramadan for the country’s Muslim community. The move could further fuel discussions about religious autonomy among Yoruba Muslims, who have in the past expressed concerns about regional independence in religious affairs. For instance, the Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement described the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III’s recent call for the imposition of Sharia law in Yorubaland as “disrespectful”. The secessionist group stated this in a statement, signed by its leader Professor Banji Akintoye, arguing that no Islamic provisions mandate Yoruba Muslims to accept the Sultan as their leader. The statement also pointed out that the Sultan’s message alleges that Yoruba people are denying Yoruba Muslims their religious rights, which is described as “falsehood.” As of now, there has been no official response from the Sultan of Sokoto or the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) regarding this independent declaration. The statement reads: “The League also takes this opportunity to announce the possibility sighting of the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan in the year 1446 AH (2025 CE), in accordance with the resolutions of the first session of the Unified Hijri Calendar Committee held in Istanbul from 26-29 Dhul-Hijjah 1389 AH (November 27-30, 1978 CE). “This is also based on the confirmation by the International Fiqh Council in its Resolution No. (18) during its third conference in 1986, as well as the outcomes of the scientific symposium held in Paris on 12-13 Rabi’ al-Awwal 1433 AH (February 4-5, 2012 CE), which was titled “The Beginning of Hijrah Months and the Hijrah Calendar.” “This symposium was attended by eminent scholars and experts in jurisprudence and astronomy, and several jurisprudential and astronomical researches were presented. “Precise astronomical calculations for the crescent moon of Ramadan 1446 AH confirm that the conjunction (Astronomical New Moon) will occur at 00:45 (12:45 AM) Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) on Friday, February 28, 2025, corresponding to 29 Sha’ban 1446 AH, which is 01:45 (1:45 AM) local time in Nigeria. “Consequently, the crescent moon will be visible after sunset on 29 Sha’ban 1446 AH equivalent of 28 February 2025 in various parts of the world, either with the naked eye or through telescopes and observation devices. “Therefore, the first day of the blessed month of Ramadan 1446 AH will, Insha Allah, be Saturday, March 1, 2025, with the first Taraweeh prayer (Ashamu or Ashari) coming up on Friday night, February 28, 2025, Insha Allah.”

YORUBA MUSLIMS NOT YOUR SLAVES – AKINTOYE TELLS SULTAN

SHARIA: YORUBA MUSLIMS NOT YOUR SLAVES – AKI TOTE TELLS SULTAN The Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement has described the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III’s recent call for the imposition of Sharia law in Yorubaland as “disrespectful”. The secessionist group stated this in a statement, signed by its leader Professor Banji Akintoye, arguing that no Islamic provisions mandate Yoruba Muslims to accept Sultan as their leader. The statement also pointed out that the Sultan’s message alleges that Yoruba people are denying Yoruba Muslims their religious rights, which is described as “falsehood.” The statement went on to advise the Fulani nation to reconsider their approach to religious and political matters in Nigeria, citing the dangers of their “born-to-rule” mentality and the need to respect other peoples. The statement reads in part: “We Yoruba people have read your statement that was sent to the public through the Deputy National Adviser of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Imam Haroun Eze, following the failed attempt to impose Sharia Courts on the Oyo and Ekiti States of the Yoruba people of the Nigerian Southwest. Since your spokesperson, Imam Haroun Eze, made your statement to the public, we also hereby make our response public. “The Sultan’s spokesman chose to couch the Sultan’s statement to the Yoruba people as if the Sultan were an overlord of the Yoruba people. The statement said in effect that Yoruba people must accept Sharia as dictated by the Sultan. We have great respect for the Sultan as a traditional ruler, since our own traditional rulers, our Obas, are mightily important to our Yoruba nation. “But because of the Sultan’s chosen approach in his message, we are reluctantly compelled to spell out our response in ways that truthfully uphold our Yoruba nation’s independence, integrity and dignity, leaving no doubt about what is our nation’s relationship with the Sultan. “The Sultan’s message claims that the Sultan is the head of the Islamic religion in Nigeria. Well, while our Yoruba Muslims faithfully surrender their lives to the Almighty God Allah and fully exalt Allah’s great Prophet Mohammed, most do not know the Sultan as their leader. “There is no provision in the tenets of Islam that lays the duty on our Yoruba Muslims to accept the Sultan of Sokoto as their leader. All Yoruba people of all religions have our own traditional rulers, which traditional rulers are among the most revered on the African continent, and of whom the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo are the foremost and topmost royal fathers of all Yoruba people. “Therefore, it is important to get rid of the presumption that the Sultan is the leader of Yoruba Muslims. That the Sultan is not leader or father of Yoruba Muslims is clearly borne out by the fact that while, during the past ten years, the Sultan’s Fulani people have killed countless thousands of Yoruba Muslims in all parts of Yorubaland, have destroyed the farms, villages and other assets of Yoruba Muslim farmers, have raped and killed countless Yoruba Muslim women, and have kidnapped, and extorted millions of Naira as ransom for countless kidnapped Yoruba Muslim men, women and children, the Sultan of Sokoto has not, at any time, raised his influential voice against these heinous crimes by his Fulani people against Yoruba people – or even, at least, against Yoruba Muslims. “Therefore, the Sultan should not find it difficult to understand that Yoruba Muslims cannot see him as their leader. These facts are very important. The Sultan and Imam Haroun Eze must have noticed that in the enormous mass of hostile responses among Yoruba people against the Sultan’s message, there are as many Muslim as non-Muslim voices – in fact, probably more Muslim than non-Muslim…
