TWO-STOREY BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION COLLAPSES IN ENUGU, ONE FEARED DEAD
Tragedy struck in Enugu State on Tuesday, as a section of a 2-storey building under construction collapsed, trapping a carpenter who is feared dead.
The incident occurred at a building site located along Ugwunwani road, off Corner Stone bus stop, when the structure’s staircase collapsed in the morning.
Eyewitnesses reported that the carpenter was working on the building when the tragic incident occurred.
The collapsed section is believed to be a staircase that was recently added to the building.
Rescue efforts are likely underway to search for the trapped carpenter.
“The carpenter who’s from Cross River State was losing the planks used in the construction when the step collapsed,” the witness said.
“We heard his shout and rushed to rescue him and removed the debris that was on him. We were able to bring him out but he was barely moving.
“He was quickly rushed to Somadina hospital at Nike Road, Abakpa Nike, Enugu. However, one of the persons that took him to the hospital said he wasn’t responding.”
In the aftermath of the building collapse, the relatives of the trapped carpenter violently confronted the building’s owner, who was present at the construction site when the incident occurred.
The grieving family members, overcome with anger and frustration, attacked the owner, holding them responsible for the tragic incident. The scene turned chaotic as emotions ran high, highlighting the devastating impact of the collapse on the victim’s loved ones.
The collapse of the stairway under construction I believe could have been prevented. They probably went to remove the bottom forms untimely against structural requirements. The concrete didn’t cure adequately and that easily leads to collapse. The owner might have rushed the carpenter to remove the forms – bad idea, obviously. Please allow the construction engineers to do their work professionally – saves lives.
