Several months after her suspension as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, nothing seems to have happened with the case involving Dr. Betta Edu over allegations of corruption, being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

As the anti-graft agency delays to absolve or indict the ex-minister, or make public its findings, there are suspicions that she may be let off the hook, despite the weight of allegations levelled against her, which led to her ouster in January.

While Edu has maintained her innocence, EFCC, in a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, had said it has not absolved any of the suspects facing investigations over allegations of corruption perpetrated at the ministry.

It further clarified that it has extended its ongoing discreet investigations to other fraudulent dealings involving the humanitarian ministry and its past and former officials, saying “Investigations are ongoing and advancing steadily. The public is enjoined to ignore any claim to the contrary.”

However, investigation by the anti-graft agency has lingered for six straight months, despite overwhelming public interest in the matter.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu suspended Edu in January after a leaked memo showed that the former minister indulged in unwholesome financial dealings while serving at the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry.

Edu’s case aroused public interest and fierce criticism when the widely circulated memo showed the former minister ordered the transfer of N585.2 million into a private bank account.

Tinubu also suspended the social welfare programme and the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, NSIPA, Halima Shehu, over alleged N37.1 billion fraud in the ministry.

Meanwhile, several months ago the Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos ordered another former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters Management and Social Development, Ms Sadia Umar-Farouk, to account for payments of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians in six months.

The judgment delivered by Justice Deinde Isaac Dipeolu, follows a Freedom of Information suit number: FHC/L/CS/853/2021, brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP.

The former minister was also ordered by the court to provide the list and details of the beneficiaries who received the payments, the number of states covered and the payments per state.

“The former minister is compelled by the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act to give information to any person including SERAP. I therefore grant an order of mandamus directing and compelling the minister to provide the spending details of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians in 2021.”

“Provide SERAP with details of how the beneficiaries have been selected and the mechanisms for the payments to the beneficiaries.”

“The minister did not give any reason for the refusal to disclose the details sought by SERAP. SERAP has reeled out the relevant sections of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 that the minister contravened and has in line with sections 20 and 25(1) of the Act prayed this Court for an order of mandamus to direct and compel the minister to provide the information sought,” the judge said.

Both Edu and her predecessor, Farouq, are among key serving and former officials that EFCC has interrogated over alleged misappropriation of multi-billion naira social welfare funds meant for vulnerable and poor Nigerians.Efforts to get the EFCC to respond to why it was not forthcoming on the investigation yielded no response.

    WE’RE NOT BARREN – OBASEKI’S WIFE REACTS TO OSHIOMHOLE’S OUTBURST The First Lady of Edo State, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, has advised childless women to see themselves not as barren but as fruitful, potential and proud mothers of children that would come in God’s time. Mrs Obaseki gave the advice on Saturday in reaction to a viral video in which the former Governor of the State, Adams Oshiomhole made remarks about her being childless. Betsy Obaseki, who spoke during a zoom meeting with Edo women in the diaspora, in the company of Mrs Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, the wife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, reminded women that everyone was created by God for a purpose. While addressing over 200 women who joined the zoom meeting from various countries, Mrs Obaseki said, “I dare to call you fruitful. You and I are potential and proud mothers of children that will come in God’s time. Enjoy the life God has given you. “My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths, and evacuations of babies who died in our wombs is that everyone was created by God for a purpose. “And as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured; you are not barren. “Take your mind off your challenge, and before you know it, children will start coming,” she said. She, however, opined that her contributions to the society had gone beyond the biological aspect of motherhood. She noted that being fruitful was not limited to childbearing but about impacting lives and creating positive change in the society. “There is no point in feeling bad. Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” she added. Obaseki also shared a message of encouragement for women who, like herself, have faced the pain of miscarriages and stillbirths, urging them not to feel discouraged or defined by their losses. On her part, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo thanked the women for attending the meeting and promised to continue all of Betsy Obaseki’s programmes for women and the girl-child in Edo if her husband was elected. In her welcome address, the founder of the group, Mrs. Adesuwa Obasohan, promised to support Asue Ighodalo’s candidacy, just as the group had supported Governor Godwin Obaseki.

As they danced and cheered, the president who was seated calmly watched in silence. When it was time to speak, Nigeria’s number one citizen said, “Ajuri, your job is secure.”The presidential spokesperson bowed, smiled sheepishly as he dropped a document in front of his principal. Tinubu perused it briefly, signed, then went on to acknowledge the remarks of the crowd in front of himBut on Saturday, Chief Ajuri Ngelale announced that he was quitting the job alongside the ones he secured after July 31, 2023, when he was named Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity. Tinubu had also appointed Ngelale Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, and Chairman, Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.Femi Adesina, Ngelale’s predecessor as official spokesperson of the President, spent eight full years in office. Reuben Abati, who occupied that position before Adesina spent four years in office, hence some persons were surprised over why Ngelale stepped aside in a little over a year.In his announcement, Ngelale predicated his indefinite leave of absence on “medical matters presently affecting my immediate, nuclear family”.Given what Abati wrote shortly after the ocean of change swept Jonathan out of power, one could easily conclude that Ngelale was in the thick of his own battle.In a piece entitled, ‘The Spiritual Side of Aso Rock,’ Abati narrated some mysterious happenings in the seat of power.“I have heard people insist that there is some form of witchcraft at work in the country’s seat of government. I am ordinarily not a superstitious person, but working in the Villa, I eventually became convinced that there must be something supernatural about power and closeness to it. I’ll start with a personal testimony.”“I was given an apartment to live in inside the Villa. It was furnished and equipped. But when my son, Michael arrived, one of my brothers came with a pastor who was supposed to stay in the apartment. But the man refused claiming that the Villa was full of evil spirits and that there would soon be a fire accident in the apartment. He complained about too much human sacrifice around the Villa and advised that my family must never sleep overnight inside the Villa.“I thought the man was talking nonsense and he wanted the luxury of a hotel accommodation. But he turned out to be right. The day I hosted family friends in that apartment and they slept overnight, there was indeed a fire accident. The guests escaped and they were so thankful.“Not long after, the President’s physician living two compounds away had a fire accident in his home. He and his children could have died. He escaped with bruises. Around the Villa while I was there, someone always died or their relations died.“I can confirm that every principal officer suffered one tragedy or the other; it was as if you needed to sacrifice something to remain on duty inside that environment. Even some of the women became merchants of dildo because they had suffered a special kind of death in their homes (I am sorry to reveal this) and many of the men complained about something that had died below their waists too. The ones who did not have such misfortune had one ailment or the other that they had to nurse. From cancer to brain and prostate surgery and whatever, the Villa was a hospital full of agonizing patients.”Abati’s narrative makes it easy to assume that a similar fate has befallen Ngelale.
