PREACH LOVE, STOP RECKLESS ATTACKS OF CATHOLIC CHURCH – ARCHBISHOP KAIGAMA

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev Ignatius Kaigama, on Sunday raised concern over the recklessness displayed by preachers in condemning Catholics aggressively.

According to him, one would think their lives or salvation depend on how viciously they condemn the Catholic Church and its doctrine, traditions and worship.

“We call on our brothers and sisters who spend hours of their church service attacking the Catholic Church to devote more time to preaching love, to seek ways of living out practical Christianity to counteract the trending secularism, inhuman and unnatural behaviors, lack of respect for life, etc”, he said.

Kaigama in his Homily delivered at St. Elizabeth Pastoral Area, Kogo, Abuja, said the critics seem to be so angered by the presence of the Catholic Church in every nook and cranny of the world, spewing falsehood that Catholics worship Mary.

He said, “Occasionally, I see some social media preachers condemning Catholics aggressively; you would think their lives or salvation depend on how viciously they condemn the Catholic Church and its doctrine, traditions, worship, etc. They seem to be so angered by the presence of the Catholic Church in every nook and cranny of the world. They know that the Catholic Church has organizational ability, hierarchical orderliness, uniformity of the sacraments, diplomatic finesse, etc.

“Somebody must research why such pastors launch such violent verbal attacks on the Catholic Church.

Instead of preaching about the word of God, heaven, salvation, and love beyond frontiers, they emit bile and heap unprintable vocabularies on Catholics.

“They struggle so hard to portray Catholics as bad people, not even Christians, but satanic, cultists, etc. The Lord is good! According to the latest statistics, the number of baptized Catholics is on the rise, getting closer to 1.4 billion! Our Church continues to grow without much noise or fuss; no adverts, no promise of miracles, no material enticements, no pull him down (PHD) preaching; the grace of God is sufficient.

“They attack us that we worship Mary. We don’t. We only honor her as God first honored her, followed by the Archangel. I tell Catholics that if they accuse you of “worshipping” Mary, without fear or shame, burst into “Hail Mary full of Grace….”They attack us for not knowing the Bible: in their fanatical interpretation of the Bible, they believe the Bible dropped from heaven.

“We Catholics say it is the word of God written in the words of men. They say, “sola scriptura,” that it is only scripture that should guide us. Catholics say, that before the Bible was written, the Catholic Church was already flourishing. The Bible was a product of Catholic Church traditions. Perhaps they need to study the history of the Bible: the canonical books of the Christian Bible were approved by various Councils, Synods, and Popes of the Catholic Church, beginning with the Council of Rome in 382 A.D.

“The New Testament was written over the course of almost a century after Jesus’ death. The first gospel was written 40 years after the death of Jesus. They need to know that the Bible’s origin is both human and divine—not just from God and not just from humans. When they say, “Is it in the Bible?” they forget John 21:25 which says, “Many other things that Jesus did, which, if each of these were written down, the world itself, I suppose, would not be able to contain the books that would be written.”

“They do not know that John Chrysostom between 386 and 388 AD was the first to use the Greek phrase ta biblia (“the books”) to describe both the Old and New Testaments together.

They may have not known that the first complete printed Bible was by the Catholic Church, the work of one Johannes Gutenberg in about 1455.

“How do you turn around to attack the Catholic Church of not knowing the Bible and just having become a church denomination, you claim to interpret it even better than the Church Fathers: Clement, Ignatius, and Polycarp who saw and heard from the Apostles.

What is most important to a Christian is not how expert you are in condemning your fellow Christians, but how much fruit you bear by being rooted in Christ. Unfortunately, some Christians think they are real Christians depending on how nastily they criticize other Christians or Muslims.

“Sadly, too, some Muslims believe that putting their religious interests first in both public and government affairs is a priority to checkmate any other religious groups. The Bible or Koran does not ask us to commit injustice against another, fight useless fights or engage in useless arguments.

“It is time to band together to tackle the roots of poverty, disease, violence, etc. Just be nice to people whether they are Muslims, Buddhists, or even pagans. This is what can make the world go round. See the neighbor in the eyes of your brother or sister, not as an enemy to be dominated, eliminated, discriminated against, etc.

“Catholics come to worship not because of a personality who has become a cult, an excellent preacher, miracle worker, visionary, or prophet. We come to Church to commune with Jesus because we are convinced of His presence in the Eucharist.“To all our “born again” critics, you don’t need to become hostile to anyone to express your love for Christ. Let your good fruits show, like those of Paul and Barnabas. Tertullian, a second Century Apologist and theologian, in his treatises To the Gentiles and Apology, written in defense of the faith, once said that the pagans should be able to say of the Christians, “Look . . . how they love one another and how they are ready to die for each other…”

SHARIA: YORUBA MUSLIMS NOT YOUR SLAVES – AKINTOYE TELLS SULTAN The Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement has described the Sultan of Sokoto, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III’s recent call for the imposition of Sharia law in Yorubaland as “disrespectful”. The secessionist group stated this in a statement, signed by its leader Professor Banji Akintoye, arguing that no Islamic provisions mandate Yoruba Muslims to accept Sultan as their leader. The statement also pointed out that the Sultan’s message alleges that Yoruba people are denying Yoruba Muslims their religious rights, which is described as “falsehood.” The statement went on to advise the Fulani nation to reconsider their approach to religious and political matters in Nigeria, citing the dangers of their “born-to-rule” mentality and the need to respect other peoples. The statement reads in part: “We Yoruba people have read your statement that was sent to the public through the Deputy National Adviser of the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Imam Haroun Eze, following the failed attempt to impose Sharia Courts on the Oyo and Ekiti States of the Yoruba people of the Nigerian Southwest. Since your spokesperson, Imam Haroun Eze, made your statement to the public, we also hereby make our response public. “The Sultan’s spokesman chose to couch the Sultan’s statement to the Yoruba people as if the Sultan were an overlord of the Yoruba people. The statement said in effect that Yoruba people must accept Sharia as dictated by the Sultan. We have great respect for the Sultan as a traditional ruler, since our own traditional rulers, our Obas, are mightily important to our Yoruba nation. “But because of the Sultan’s chosen approach in his message, we are reluctantly compelled to spell out our response in ways that truthfully uphold our Yoruba nation’s independence, integrity and dignity, leaving no doubt about what is our nation’s relationship with the Sultan. “The Sultan’s message claims that the Sultan is the head of the Islamic religion in Nigeria. Well, while our Yoruba Muslims faithfully surrender their lives to the Almighty God Allah and fully exalt Allah’s great Prophet Mohammed, most do not know the Sultan as their leader. “There is no provision in the tenets of Islam that lays the duty on our Yoruba Muslims to accept the Sultan of Sokoto as their leader. All Yoruba people of all religions have our own traditional rulers, which traditional rulers are among the most revered on the African continent, and of whom the Ooni of Ife and the Alaafin of Oyo are the foremost and topmost royal fathers of all Yoruba people. “Therefore, it is important to get rid of the presumption that the Sultan is the leader of Yoruba Muslims. That the Sultan is not leader or father of Yoruba Muslims is clearly borne out by the fact that while, during the past ten years, the Sultan’s Fulani people have killed countless thousands of Yoruba Muslims in all parts of Yorubaland, have destroyed the farms, villages and other assets of Yoruba Muslim farmers, have raped and killed countless Yoruba Muslim women, and have kidnapped, and extorted millions of Naira as ransom for countless kidnapped Yoruba Muslim men, women and children, the Sultan of Sokoto has not, at any time, raised his influential voice against these heinous crimes by his Fulani people against Yoruba people – or even, at least, against Yoruba Muslims. “Therefore, the Sultan should not find it difficult to understand that Yoruba Muslims cannot see him as their leader. These facts are very important. The Sultan and Imam Haroun Eze must have noticed that in the enormous mass of hostile responses among Yoruba people against the Sultan’s message, there are as many Muslim as non-Muslim voices – in fact, probably more Muslim than non-Muslim voices.…

HARDSHIP: CHRISTIANS NO LONGER ATTEND CHURCH, GIVE OFFERINGS – ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP

HARDSHIP: CHRISTIANS NO LONGER ATTEND CHURCH, GIVE OFFERINGS – ANGLICAN ARCHBISHOP LAMENTS THE Archbishop of Ibadan Province, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Dr. Williams Aladekugbe, has lamented that the economic crunch in the country has prevented Christians from attending services and giving offerings in churches. He said this while delivering the 1st Distinguished Alumni Lecture of the Department of Religious Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan, in Ibadan, at the weekend. He noted that the hardship had compelled a cleric to call President Bola Tinubu and ask him to save people from the economic crises. Speaking on the topic, entitled “The faith once delivered to the saints in the context of contemporary socio-economic challenges”, held at the Otunba Subomi Balogun Conference centre, UI, he said: “The present economic hardship resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy is also having its effects on the Christians in Nigeria, as many families could no longer attend church services, some of those who manage to attend church services, have no money for offerings and other contributions in the Church. “It must be noted that Christians nationwide, along with the adherents of other faiths, are under economic pressure. This situation has forced a cleric to call on President Tinubu during the burial of Rotimi Akeredolu, the late governor of Ondo State by saying ‘You said it’s your turn, now save Nigerians from hunger’.” Aladekugbe, who is also the Bishop of Ibadan North (Anglican) Diocese, said: “In Nigeria, in the past, people had demonstrated against unfriendly policy bringing bad economy, it is not different today as groups of people have demonstrated from time to time to show their annoyance at the present economic policy of the government. “Till now, people are taking to the streets to demonstrate perhaps the government will change her policy. This time around, the series of demonstrations have failed as high costs of all things in the market persist. Nigerians call on President Tinubu to end hunger and hardship. “Groups, associations, clubs, traditional rulers, clerics and the general populace have been groaning under the economic policy of the present regime. There is no point hiding the fact that Nigerians are frustrated, hungry and angry. “The hardship, insecurity, poverty and unemployment in the country are such that no one can pacify anybody. The socio-economic reforms of the Federal Government have inflicted unparalleled hardship on Nigerians. The soaring cost of food has escalated the suffering of Nigerians and crime has greatly increased. “It has been observed that the present situation has become unbearable for Nigerians. People in different locations of the country are lamenting and discussing the future of Nigeria’s political structure as a result of present economic woes on social media, in the streets, and in club houses, voices are being heard that the faith of a common man has been affected. Some people are saying ‘God, where are you?’. “The clergy and the ministers of God have more to do at a time like this to save people from depression, loss of hope and probably from suicide. Lectures, sermons and teachings should be intensified to keep the faith of the Christians alive so that they can triumph over this period which is believed would be for a short period.” He explained that people exhibit various forms of fear based on the current situation but warned that faith should be cultivated as a step to attracting God’s divine intervention. The cleric said: “In the Nigeria of today, the people’s religious lives are characterised with fear of the enemies, fear of tomorrow, fear of the unknown, fear of poverty and fear of what has not happened but been imagined, all these seem unsolvable to the people because of the absence of faith. “Looking at the myriad…
