HOW EX-PRESIDENT BUHARI FUNDED EBUBE-AGU THROUGH UZODINMA, UMAHI TO KILL SOUTHEAST RESIDENTS – UK, US GROUPS ALLEGE
HOW EX-PRESIDENT, BUHARI FUNDED EBUBE-AGU THROUGH UZODINMA, UMAHI TO KILLSOUTH-EAST RESIDENTS –US, UK GROUPS ALLEGE A special investigative report by some research groups in the United States, the United Kingdom and Nigeria has revealed how former President Muhammadu Buhari allegedly used the Ebube Agu security outfit to harass and kill thousands of innocent Igbo residents and push for a radical Islamic agenda in the South-East region. The report was published as a collaborative effort of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), the Ekwenche Research Institute, Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Global Igbo Leaders Coalition (GIL), United Kingdom, and the Rising Sun Charities Organisation, Newark-New Jersey, USA. The organisations noted that the “Ebube-Agu Security arrangement” was also a channel through which illicit small arms and light weapons were proliferated in the region, adding that the Imo and Eboniy state governments were particularly culpable in the implementation of the Jihadist Fulani and Islamic agenda. The report was signed by researchers including; Emeka Umeagbalasi for Intersociety; Ositadinma Agu for Ekwenche Research Institute, Chicago, USA; Prof Justin Akujieze, Board Chairman, Ekwenche Institute; Nze Amadiebube Mbama for Global Igbo Leaders Coalition, Georgia, USA, and Bridget Okafor, Rising Sun Charities Organisation, UK. The report stated that the remote reasons behind the rising and proliferation of more than 20 armed killer entities in Igbo Land, especially South-East and Igbo parts of the South-South Nigeria since 2015 and January 2021 (when escalations and proliferations heightened) was traced to “Buhari’s bent on laying siege, conquering and enslaving the Igbo Land, her defenceless populations and properties for purposes of radical Islamism and politics of hate, segregation and exclusion.” According to the report titled, “Who is killing who outside the law in Igbo land”, the worst affected states include Imo and Ebonyi states, followed by Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Rivers and Delta states. The report said, “By early 2016, the Buhari’s Government allegedly initiated secret Islamic conquest movements of the Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen and other Jihadists; assembled from within and outside Nigeria and armed with AK-47s. “This was the beginning of “political and religious” insecurity and proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons (SALWs) in Igbo Land. The Islamic conquest movements were also strongly suspected to have been heavily aided and protected by the Nigerian military formations during which forests, bushes and farmlands of South-South, South-East, Middle-Belt and Christian parts of the South-West were invaded, seized and occupied. “Findings by Intersociety later showed that over 700 communal locations including forests, bushes and farmlands across the South-East and Igbo parts of Rivers, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Nasarrawa, Kogi and Benue States have been seized and occupied by Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen and other Government assembled Jihadists as at 2022. “These findings were also corroborated by a former Police DIG (retired in 2020) who in 2021 disclosed that “not less than 336 locations in the South-East have been occupied by Fulani Herdsmen armed with AK-47s”. “The Buhari’s Government also saw the rise of IPOB and its Self Determination agitations as a serious threat to its State Jihad Project and to counter this, the Government adopted radical approaches including funding and arming of counterfeiters using conformist political actors including top Government functionaries in Ebonyi State (under Umahi) and Imo State (under Uzodinma). “The above was to the extent that the past Government of Ebonyi State was strongly suspected to have been federally contracted to counterfeit and counter the IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (formed in Dec 2020) leading to the launch of ‘Ebubeagu Security Arrangement’ in April 2021 to counter ESN and sustain Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen terrorism in Igbo Land. “The idea behind the “Ebubeagu Security Arrangement” was later found to have been muted by Buhari Government of Nigeria using the Chairmanship of…
INEC PROSECUTING 774 ELECTORAL OFFENDERS FROM 2023 ELECTIONS, SAYS MAHMOOD YAKUBU
INEC PROSECUTING 774 ELECTORAL OFFENDERS FROM 2023 ELECTIONS, SAYS MAHMOOD YAKUBU Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the commission is prosecuting 774 electoral offenders from the 2023 general election. Yakubu spoke on Friday during a meeting with journalists at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. He reassured the public that the commission is committed to continually improving the electoral process. He also noted that the recent Ondo state governorship election has been widely recognised as an improvement, particularly in the management of logistics and the performance of election technology. Yakubu explained that recent judicial and legislative actions underscore INEC’s efforts to address offenses committed by officials assigned to specific responsibilities within the commission. “The recent successful prosecution of a returning officer in Akwa Ibom state is a prime example,” he said. “The commission has been diligently pursuing this case, which stems from the 2019 general election. “In this particular case, it took nearly six years to secure a successful prosecution at the trial court. “Through our collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), we are prosecuting cases involving 774 alleged offenders from the 2023 general election. “So far, successful prosecutions have been recorded in Kebbi and Kogi states. “Additionally, our collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on vote-buying has led to similar successes in Lagos, Kwara, and Gombe states. However, many cases are still pending.” The INEC chairman highlighted a major challenge in the timely resolution of these cases. “A significant obstacle to the swift administration of justice is that electoral offenses are not time-bound, unlike post-election offenses, which are handled through tribunals,” he said. “Furthermore, electoral offenses are exclusively prosecuted by magistrates and state high courts in the jurisdictions where the offenses occur. “These cases are not given priority, as the courts also deal with a wide range of other matters. “As a result, electoral offenses often carry over from one general election to the next, which can hinder the diligent prosecution of cases.” Yakubu emphasised the need for reform, noting that, “It is therefore essential to renew our call for the creation of an electoral offenses tribunal with specific jurisdiction and a limited timeframe for the swift resolution of cases.” The INEC chairman also appealed to the media to “join in the patriotic advocacy for the betterment of our electoral democracy”.
MASS RESIGNATIONS HIT NIGERIAN COMMUNITY IN UK AMID CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS
MASS RESIGNATIONS HIT NIGERIAN COMMUNITY IN UK AMID CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS The President of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom on Twitter (X), Mr Benjamin Kuti, aka Oluomo of Derby, has decided to step down from his role as the leader of the community. The social media group is made up of over 75,000 Nigerians many of whom are in different parts of the UK and sometimes hold offline meetings and celebrations. Oluomo of Derby quit as the president of the community after a barrage of criticisms from members following the running of the group and handling of finances. Aside from Kuti, other group leaders also revealed their intentions to step down from their posts. Among those who were affected were DHK Rullah and Idris Ayinde. Oluomo of Derby, who founded the group, and other leaders wrote on Thursday about the decisions to tender their resignations via their respective X pages. Mr Kuti, in his post, said he would be glad to hand over to the next elected leader, adding that he took responsibility for all that went down in the community. “I take full responsibility for the turn of events over the years, and the current unsettling state of the community,” he wrote. “I will be stepping down as a moderator and all posts made with the official handle will be at the approval of the NEB.” “I regret my lack of absolute accountability and transparency to the community and to this end, I have carefully thought the following decisions through in the interest of furthering our community’s goals.” He added, “I am happy to hand over the presidency of the community to the next elected President at the chosen time of the community to conduct its elections. However, as the founder of the community, will remain a PSC of the company.” Also, Ayinde said he had resigned from his position as a volunteer consultant. He added, “The executives/directors are responsible for preparing the financial statements that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs and activities of the company/community. t“Having completed the submission of the financial statements and tax filing for the community for the period of 22/11/2022 to 30/11/2023 and 1/12/2023 to 31/12/2024, I hereby tender my resignation from the volunteer consultant role with immediate effect as my job is now done!” Rullah accepted his responsibility as he vowed to refund all the money he “received”. “I want you to know that I take full responsibility for my actions. I understand that my mistakes have consequences and as a tangible demonstration of my commitment to making amends I am going to make full refunds of the total monies I received,” he said. “This will be paid in installments back into the NIUK official account and can be confirmed by anyone when this is done. It is the least I can do to show my remorse and dedication to rectifying the harm caused.” Nigerians in the UK Twitter community had alleged financial infractions in the community’s operations and called on the leaders to be held accountable. According to them, the expenditure moved from £9,440.41 in 2023 to £68,224.11 in 2024. In the account balance posted, the community realised £36,035.55 for 2023 and £2,997.00 sponsorship/partnership and donations in 2024. For the end of the year party in 2023, it spent £7,225.65, while it was £5,061.00 for 2024. It also quoted £5,350.00 for community support/donations in 2023, while £813.65 for the same in 2024. Most of these gaps further drove the members to question the authenticity of the account balance. For instance, one Ola Dayo on X asked, “How did expenditure go from £9,440.41 in 2023 to £68,224.11 in 2024?” The member added, “Why is there a 2023 December end-of-year…
I WILL MAKE IT HARDER FOR IMMIGRANTS TO GET BRITISH CITIZENSHIP – KEMI BADENOCH
I WILL MAKE IT HARDER FOR IMMIGRANTS TO GET BRITISH CITIZENSHIP – KEMI BADENOCH VOWS The United Kingdom Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, has vowed that she will make it more difficult for immigrants to get British citizenship. While making one of her first policy announcements since she became leader, Badenoch said immigrants would only be able to apply for citizenship after being in the UK for 15 years. Badenoch also declared that indefinite leave to remain, which paves the way for citizenship, should not be granted to those who have criminal records or who had claimed benefits or social housing. According to her, citizenship was a privilege, not just a right and should only be for those with a “meaningful connection to the UK”. Obtaining indefinite leave to remain, ILR gives people the right to live, work and study in the UK. It is usually possible for a person to apply for ILR if they have worked in the UK for at least five years, although it can be two or three years if they came to the UK on particular visas.
2027: OPPOSITION FORCES UNITE AGAINST TINUBU
2027: OPPOSITION FORCES UNITE TO OUST TINUBU As the 2027 general elections draw closer, opposition parties and dissatisfied members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are intensifying their behind-the-scenes consultations, strategizing to form a formidable coalition against President Bola Tinubu’s administrati Key political stakeholders from the North and South, including opposition parties, APC defectors, and civil society groups, are engaged in talks to establish a united front. While the full details of the strategies remain closely guarded to avoid APC suppression, sources revealed that the belief is growing within the opposition that the current administration’s policies have created vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Northern stakeholders, in particular, are leaning toward a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu, citing the negative impact his administration’s policies have had on their region. Among those leading the talks are Olawale Okunniyi, Director General of the National Consultative Front; Ralph Okey-Nwosu, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress; and Dr Usman Bugaje, a former presidential aide and civil society leader. Okunniyi confirmed that the consultations involve key members from the APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), as well as youth movements. He said a national summit is scheduled for May, which will bring together influential figures to shape the future of the opposition coalition. According to Okunniyi, the opposition movement will be unveiled either through the adoption of an existing party or the formation of a new one. He stressed that the goal is to safeguard democracy, build a stronger political system, and create a powerful opposition, similar to how the APC once united to topple the previous government. “We are targeting June or July, following our national summit in May. This summit will bring together key figures to shape the future of what will be a formidable, ultra-mega opposition movement. Expect something concrete by July,” Okunniyi told Punch. He also hinted at the involvement of major political figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, both of whom are actively engaged in consultations about their roles within the movement. He added that discussions about rebranding and restructuring existing parties are underway, with the possibility of adopting the PDP or other parties under consideration. Okunniyi noted that these moves will require the consent and restructuring of leadership within those parties to ensure openness to changes. Meanwhile, ADC National Chairman Ralph Okey-Nwosu confirmed that talks for the coalition are progressing but stressed the need for caution to avoid interference from the ruling APC. “The current administration is weak, and Nigerians are frustrated under this government. We are mobilizing a citizens’ movement to reclaim the country in 2027,” Okey-Nwosu said. Bugaje, a prominent northern figure, also expressed discontent with Tinubu’s administration, suggesting that a viable alternative would emerge before the 2027 elections.
HOW TRUMP’S ORDER TRIGGERED MAJOR DISRUPTION IN BAUCHI
HOW TRUMP’S ORDER TRIGGERED MAJOR DISRUPTION in BAUCHI Suspension of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on the order of President Donald Trump has affected family planning programme in Bauchi State. Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, stated that the suspension activities has impacted the distribution of family planning commodities. He explained that this suspension led to challenges in ensuring a steady supply of family planning commodities to health facilities across the state. He made the remarks during an advocacy visit by members of the Civil Society Organisation, Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD), on Thursday in Bauchi. Mohammed explained that USAID was responsible for the last-mile distribution of family planning commodities to primary health care facilities across the state. “However, with the suspension of their activities, these facilities are now facing stockouts, in spite of the increasing demand for family planning services at the community level,” he added. He further revealed that the board was holding meetings to ensure that family planning commodities reached all health facilities and that there was no diversion of supplies. Expressing regret over the suspension of USAID’s activities, Mohammed emphasized the negative impact on family planning services in the state. He also mentioned that the Bauchi State government had allocated 50 million Naira as counterpart funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to supply family planning commodities. Mohammed also commended the Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative (J4PD) for their ongoing efforts in advocating for family planning, immunisation, and other maternal, newborn, and child health services. Speaking on behalf of J4PD, Mr Bashir Hassan, Knowledge and Communication Specialist, assured that the organisation would continue to support the agency in raising awareness among the public. TRUMP WITHDRAWS US FROM UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL, HALTS FUNDING FOR UNRWA
TRUMP WITHDRAWS US FROM UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL, HALTS FUNDING FOR UNRWA The Executive Order said it withdrew Washington from UNHRC and the main UN relief agency for Palestinians (UNRWA), and would review involvement in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other UN bodies Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the UN human rights council and prohibiting future funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). US funding to UNRWA was suspended in 2024 under Joe Biden’s administration, after Israel accused a handful of UNRWA employees of participating in the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023. A series of investigations, including one led by the French former foreign minister Catherine Colonna, found some “neutrality related issues” at UNRWA – but emphasised Israel had not provided evidence for its headline allegation. Trump’s first administration cut funding to the agency in 2018 before the Biden administration restarted it again in 2021. The first Trump administration also withdrew the US from the UN’s Human rRghts Council in 2018 and the Biden administration rejoined the body three years later. Donald Trump spoke to reporters as he signed executive orders preventing the US from providing support to the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (Unrwa) and withdrawing from the UN’s human rights council. Trump said he believed the UN has “tremendous potential” but “it’s not being well run”. “They’ve got to get their act together,” he said.
LAGOS LAWMAKERS WRITE APOLOGY LETTER TO TINUBU OVER REMOVAL OF EX-SPEAKER, OBASA
-LAGOS LAWMAKERS WRITE APOLOGY LETTER TO TINUBU OVER REMOVAL OF EX-SPEAKER, OBASA Members of Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday, apologised to President Bola Tinubu for initiating the impeachment process against the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa,. According to SaharaReporters, the apology followed a directive given by the leadership of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) during an emergency meeting with the lawmakers at the Lagos House, Marina on Monday night. GAC is the highest decision-making body of the Lagos APC. The meeting also had in attendance Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat. A source at the meeting disclosed that Tinubu wasn’t pleased with the impeachment move hence his insistence that it be upturned. Some members of the GAC also accused its leadership of not carrying them along before Obasa’s removal, hence they supported the President’s directive for his reinstatement. The source further told SaharaReporters that the lawmakers were told to write two apology letters to the President. The source said, “Members of the GAC after many disagreements among themselves directed the lawmakers to write two apology letters to the President. It is obvious that the lawmakers didn’t want Obasa reinstated but it seems the President really wants him back. Also, GAC members are divided on the matter. “I want to believe that apart from the reasons the President gave, I think he took that decision to avoid the state plunging into a crisis. Also, the President directed that the former Speaker be reinstated to check the excessiveness of the lawmakers. You know they removed the lawmakers without carrying some leaders of the party along. “So, they were told to write two apology letters to the President which they instantly wrote. The first letter was to apologise for making the wrong move of impeaching the Speaker without informing the leaders of the party. In the letter, they promised to commute the removal of Obasa to resignation. “The second letter was written by lawmakers from Lagos West to the President. In the letter, they accepted Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the Speaker of the House and told the President they would be disregarding the zoning formula. They expressed their willingness to allow her complete her term. Out of the 20 lawmakers from Lagos West, 17 signed the letter.” Obasa was on January 13, 2025, removed by a majority of lawmakers over alleged misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriations. He was replaced by former deputy speaker, Mojisola Meranda. Sources earlier told SaharaReporters that the action had led to a crisis within the party’s leadership. The disagreement among the APC leaders earlier became evident when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, openly opposed Obasa’s removal, describing it as illegal and a sign of disregard for party leadership. However, their stance was swiftly dismissed by another GAC member, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who described their comments as childish and inconsequential, urging party leaders to refrain from making hasty public statements on the issue. The Peoples Gazette on Sunday reported that President Bola Tinubu had instructed members of the Assembly to prepare for the reinstatement of Obasa. “The president has sent instruction that we should start preparing to let him come back,” a senior Lagos politician had told the online newspaper. “The president said Obasa will spend only a short time before resigning on his terms.“We have agreed to let him come back to give him a soft landing that he told us he deserved because of the serious political consequences of allowing this matter to endure,” the politician said, adding that they would have done things differently if they were wielding the power to make such an ultimate decision. SaharaReporters also learnt that there will…
I WON’T DENY MY IGBO IDENTITY – MBATA, OHANAEZE PRESIDENT GENERAL
I WON’T DENY MY IGBO IDENTITY – MBATA, OHANAEZE PRESIDENT GENERAL The President-General of the Igbo socio-political organisation, ‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo’, Senator John Mbata, has said nothing will ever deny his Igbo identity, describing recent criticisms against him as a lack of understanding. This is why he emphasised his commitment to supporting the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as respecting the office of the governor. Mbata stated this when the Opobo Elder Statesmen-4-Sim paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt on Monday. He dismissed recent criticisms against him, saying they were noises from those lacking understanding. He stated, “I see my responsibility as building bridges. We must connect our people to a much larger platform for development,” even as he reaffirmed his Igbo identity and the importance of unity among ethnic groups. The Ohanaeze President-General said, “Some people say they are from Benin, that their ancestry is Benin. And I say, That’s fine. Let’s go there. We say that we have a relationship with the Igbo. I’m not going to deny my Igbo identity. “Anyhow you like, talk from now till tomorrow; I’m not going to deny my ancestry. “We are related. Why are you shouting me down? I bet you these things will just naturally die down. I didn’t answer anybody because I see my responsibility as building bridges. People will, by and large, understand what we are doing. “We must operate at the highest stage of this Nigerian project. We have to be able to access the powers that be. “We must enjoy support from another perspective. Politics is played from Abuja and not here. It’s when they finish from Abuja that they come here. I won’t say everything today. A word, they say, is enough for the wise.” Earlier, the Chairman of Opobo Elder Statesmen-4-Sim, Edwin Cockeye-Brown, congratulated the new President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo on his electoral victory and expressed gratitude to him for his “unwavering support” for the Rivers State Governor before, during and after his election. Cockeye-Brown stated, “I recall particularly that during the impeachment attempt, you stood by the governor like a shining star. You supported him; you did not shake and you did not shy away.” He highlighted the long-standing relationship between the Mbata family and the Opobo people, tracing it back to his father, the late Elder Samuel Mbata, a revered gentleman and evangelist. Cockeye-Brown further said the gathering, which included some Alapu, respected elders, leaders, Senibos, Amaopusenibos, and youth representatives from the Opobo kingdom, underscored the collective commitment to unity within the state. “Your father was a prayerful man and a philanthropist. I believe it is his prayers that have enabled you to reach these heights,” he added. Cockeye-Brown praised Mbata’s steadfastness during political challenges, affirming that his election as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo was divinely ordained. In his remarks, the Rivers State Chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Livingstone Wechie, lauded the visit as historic, celebrating Senator Mbata’s leadership role for over one hundred million Ndigbo worldwide. Weche said, “This visit today is historic and prophetic. Ikwerre people will receive this with gladness. “Today, we have the tallest Ikwerre son, both in height and stature, to be given this task to lead more than one 100 million Ndigbo all over the world. “This is the stone that the builders rejected, now the chief cornerstone,” Wechie remarked, pledging continued support for Governor Fubara. Earlier, while introducing the delegation to the visit, Chief Lawrence Oko-Jaja, SAN, said they had come as a family and comrade to pay a courtesy visit to Senator John Azuta Mbata, emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration among communities. Oko-Jaja highlighted Senator Mbata’s integrity and commitment to advancing the interests of his Ikwerre people both locally and internationally. The…
