Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has advised supporters involved in political activities to stop publicly announcing their acts of fasting and prayer for political figures on radio and television.
Wike made the remark while addressing supporters, where he urged them to take responsibility for supporting their political cause but cautioned them against turning their religious activities into public announcements.
According to him, he had noticed some supporters announcing their fasting for a political figure on social media and advised them to stop doing so.
“I’ve noticed you; you are doing fasting. You’ve got to put it on social media, fasting for him. Don’t do that. Don’t do that next time,” Wike said.
He explained that while people could engage in fasting and prayer privately, they should not necessarily publicise such activities through the media.
“Because you see, what you are playing is politics. If you are fasting for him, let it be known to yourself,” he said.
Wike further advised supporters against going on radio or television to announce that they were fasting for the political figure.
“It’s not something you go on the radio and put on television, announcing that we are fasting. Don’t do that,” he said.
He then gave his personal religious view on the effectiveness of such publicised prayers, stating, “Because God does not answer such prayers.”
Wike added that he was speaking from his understanding of the political environment and said he was familiar with what he described as the “game” involved.
“I have said it. And I know this game; I know it,” he stated.
