Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna (often called Dr./Prof. Stella Okunna or “Mummy Prof”) is Nigeria’s first female Professor of Mass Communication (2001) and the first in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is from Uga in Aguata LGA, Anambra State.

Under Peter Obi (Governor of Anambra, 2006–2014), she took leave from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and served the full eight years in several senior roles:

• Commissioner for Information and Culture (2006–2009)
• Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget and Coordinating Commissioner for Development Partnerships/Donor Agencies (2009–2014)
• Chief of Staff to the Governor (concurrent with the planning portfolio in the later years)
• Chair of the MDGs Implementation Committee, Anambra State

She has said she did not know Obi before her appointment and told him she would not lie for him if his government underperformed. She later became one of his closest aides and a frequent public defender of his record on education, health, MDGs, donor partnerships, and fiscal management.

She remains associated with him in later philanthropic and political activities.

After Peter Obi government ended she returned back to classroom and continue teaching living in staff quarters.
