The Presidential Candidate of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi was in the United States, and held talks with members of the Congressional Black Caucus in the United States Congress, where discussions touched on developments in Nigeria, democratic governance and the importance of free, fair, transparent and credible elections.

The Washington engagement also brought together members of the Nigerian diaspora, political stakeholders and professionals for discussions on governance, economic development, democratic accountability and the increasingly important role Nigerians abroad can play in shaping the country’s future.

This is as conversations around Nigeria’s democratic future and the credibility of the 2027 general election continue to gather momentum.

During the visit, Obi was also hosted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Representatives candidate for Okigwe North Federal Constituency of Imo state, Hon. Chidi Mike Anyanwu alongside other Nigerians in the United States, in Washington, D.C., United States.

Speaking on the Washington engagements, Anyanwu said Nigeria’s democratic progress would ultimately depend on the confidence citizens have in the electoral process, stressing that elections must reflect the genuine choices made by Nigerians at the ballot box.

According to the Okigwe North NDC candidate, credible elections are fundamental not only to democracy but also to political stability, economic confidence and the legitimacy of government.

“Democracy becomes meaningful when the people are confident that their votes count and that leadership ultimately reflects their will. Nigeria must continue strengthening its institutions to ensure that every election is free, fair, transparent and credible,” Anyanwu said.

He also urged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain active partners in national development, noting that beyond remittances, the diaspora represents an enormous reservoir of knowledge, investment, professional expertise and international networks that can contribute significantly to Nigeria’s transformation.

Obi, while interacting with participants, spoke on the need for accountable leadership, stronger institutions and an economy capable of creating opportunities for Nigeria’s predominantly young population.

The Washington engagements formed part of broader conversations between Nigerian political leaders, the diaspora and international stakeholders on strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that Nigeria’s future elections command the confidence of both citizens and the international community.
