The Enugu State Government has suspended three traditional rulers and four Presidents-General of town unions in Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct bordering on security infractions.
The suspension was announced by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, in a statement issued on Thursday by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Nebeife.
The suspended traditional rulers are Igwe C. Ozoigbokwe of Umuaji, Imezi Owa Autonomous Community; Igwe Leo Nechi of Imezi Owa Autonomous Community; and Igwe Benedict Adinde of Umuagba Autonomous Community, all in Ezeagu Local Government Area.
Also suspended are the Presidents-General of four town unions: Chief Samson Ike of Umuagba Owa Town Union; Chief Remigus Ozoanya of Ezema Owa Town Union; Chief Peter Igwebuike of Imezi Owa Town Union; and Chief Lazarus Ejim of Ogwumike Owa Town Union.
According to Dr. Egumgbe, the state government took the decision after observing what it described as “serious acts of misconduct” bordering on security breaches in the affected communities.
The commissioner said the alleged conduct was contrary to the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, which maintains a zero-tolerance policy on insecurity across the state.
He added that the actions of the affected community leaders had undermined the government’s efforts to protect lives and property and had brought the traditional institution into disrepute.
Dr. Egumgbe stated:
“This has not only brought embarrassment to the state, sabotaged the huge investment of His Excellency in the security of lives and properties of Enugu people but also brought disrepute to the revered traditional institution of the state.”
He explained that the suspension was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Law, 2024, and the Town Union Registration and Administration Law, 2025.
The commissioner did not disclose the specific allegations against the affected officials but said the suspension took effect on July 15, 2026, pending the conclusion of investigations.
He added that the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs would take further administrative action in line with the relevant laws upon the completion of the investigation.
