XENOPHOBIA: UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PROTEST, SAY ‘MTN MUST GO, SA MUST GO’

Members of the Association of University Students staged a protest, chanting “MTN Must Go! South Africa Must Go!” in response to alleged xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

The protesters argued that while South African businesses continue to operate successfully in Nigeria, Nigerians abroad have repeatedly faced violence and discrimination. They called for stronger action to protect African migrants and urged authorities to address the recurring attacks.

The demonstration has sparked mixed reactions. While some support economic pressure as a form of protest, others argue that targeting businesses like MTN could affect thousands of Nigerian workers and customers.

The protest has once again raised questions about Nigeria–South Africa relations and how both countries can better protect their citizens.
