The Enugu State Government has warned against an alleged plan by some market leaders to shut down major markets in the state capital on Saturday in solidarity with a political rally organized to mobilize support for Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The government described the reported move as contrary to its economic development agenda and clarified that it had not approved any market closure for the event.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, said residents were free to go about their lawful businesses and activities, stressing that political participation should remain voluntary and must not disrupt economic productivity.
According to him, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has consistently prioritized economic growth and business activities, a commitment reflected in its decision to end the illegal Monday sit-at-home order upon assuming office on June 5, 2023.
“The attention of the Enugu State Government has been drawn to an alleged plan to shut markets in the state capital as a demonstration of solidarity with the Enugu East zonal rally to drum up support for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, ahead of the 2027 general election,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the goodwill expressed by traders toward the administration, Agbo said the government frowned on any attempt by market leaders to close major markets in the Enugu East Senatorial District because of the rally.
He noted that such action would run contrary to the government’s vision of expanding the state’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion and positioning Enugu as a preferred destination for investment, business, tourism, and quality living.
The commissioner further emphasized that the 1999 Constitution guarantees citizens the right to freedom of association and assembly, adding that participation in political rallies must remain a matter of personal choice.
“For emphasis, political participation should be voluntary and without any attempt to deny the people access to markets or other public spaces where they earn their daily living,” he stated.
The government warned that sanctions would be imposed on any individual or group that violates the directive by disrupting business activities or compelling traders to participate in the rally.
It therefore urged market leaders and members of the public to ensure that economic activities continue unhindered across the state during the planned political gathering.
