TONY NWOYE ADC, REPLACES OSITA NGWU, APC, AS SENATE MINORITY WHIP, SILENT ON ABBA MORO PDP

OIP 29

Senator Tony Nwoye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been announced as the new Minority Whip of the Senate.

The announcement followed the resignation of the former Minority Whip, Osita Ngwu, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While announcing the new appointment, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said Nwoye’s nomination letter was forwarded by the Senate Minority Caucus.

The ADC has technically become the lead opposition party in the Senate, boasting nine senators compared to the PDP’s five.

Despite this shift, the Senate has remained silent regarding Senator Abba Moro (PDP), who continues to serve as the Minority Leader.

Political analyst John Oloriegbe noted that the ADC should ideally nominate a new Minority Leader as the primary opposition party.

“I really don’t know why Abba Moro is still acting as Minority Leader when his party is no longer the majority within the minority,” Oloriegbe said.

He added, however, that the transition depends on whether the ADC senators have formally petitioned the Senate leadership to effect the change.

Our correspondent further reports that the plenary session saw further shifts in party alignment which involves Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro (Gombe South) defected from the PDP to the APC, citing the ongoing leadership crisis within his former party and Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada (SDP, Nasarawa West) officially informed the Senate of his move to the APC.

In his letter to Senate President Akpabio, Wadada clarified that his decision was made in August 2025, driven by internal leadership conflicts within the Social Democratic Party.
