PRESSURE MOUNTS ON ADC TO ADOPT PETER OBI AS CONSENSUS FLAGBEARER

The Village Boys Movement has called on leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to consider adopting Mr. Peter Obi as a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a statement signed by Maazi Tochukwu Ezeoke, Head of the Village Boys Movement, on behalf of the group, the organisation urged the opposition party to prioritise unity and strategic coordination as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.

The group warned that internal divisions and competing ambitions within opposition ranks could weaken efforts to mount a strong challenge in 2027, stressing the need for cohesion and a broadly acceptable candidate.

It noted that Nigeria’s current socio-economic conditions require leadership that can inspire public confidence and command wide national acceptance across demographic and regional lines.

“The opposition must recognise the seriousness of the moment and work towards unity of purpose in presenting a credible alternative to Nigerians,” the statement said.

The movement described Mr. Peter Obi as a strong consensus figure, citing his appeal among young voters, professionals, and citizens seeking reform-oriented governance. It added that his political visibility within the ADC had increased public attention on the party’s prospects ahead of the election.

While acknowledging the presence of other aspirants, the group argued that a broadly acceptable candidate would be critical to unifying opposition forces and improving electoral competitiveness.

The statement further emphasised that the call was not driven by personal ambition but by what it described as the need for national renewal and democratic consolidation.

It urged ADC leadership, delegates, and political stakeholders to embrace internal consensus-building processes that prioritise collective interest over individual aspirations.

The Village Boys Movement concluded by stating that political history often favours movements that demonstrate clarity of purpose and strategic unity at critical moments.
