A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) backed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says the party’s national convention will proceed as scheduled despite reported moves to halt the exercise through the courts.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Jungudo Mohammed, the NCWC national publicity secretary, said court rulings have unequivocally recognised the committee as the legitimate body to steer the affairs of the party.

Mohammed said judgements of the federal high courts and the court of appeal have affirmed the authority of the caretaker committee, adding that the decisions remain binding.

“The judgments of The Federal High Courts and Court of Appeal have affirmed the legitimacy and authority of the National Caretaker Working Committee as the body duly recognized to steer the affairs of the party at this time,” the statement reads.

“These judicial pronouncements are binding and remain in full force. We therefore urge all members of our party and the general public to be guided accordingly and disregard any contrary claims or misleading narratives.”

He expressed concern over suspected attempts by some individuals to destabilise the leadership structure of the opposition party.

Mohammed alleged that a group led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki is seeking an injunction at a court in Ibadan to stop the forthcoming convention.

He described the move as unfortunate, noting that the party leadership had previously extended invitations for reconciliation, which were not honoured.

“This is particularly unfortunate given that the leadership of the party had, in good faith, extended several invitations and opportunities for reconciliation and dialogue,” he said.

“Regrettably, these overtures were ignored, as the said faction failed to present itself for meaningful engagement.”

The NCWC spokesperson said while the PDP remains committed to unity, internal democracy, and the rule of law, it would not allow actions that undermine its collective interest.

He also called on the chief judge of the federal high court and the state high court to take judicial notice of “attempts to abuse court processes”.

“We reaffirm our confidence in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man and trust that justice will continue to be served in accordance with the law,” Mohammed added.

He assured party members that the national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 will go ahead as planned.

He urged members to remain law-abiding and focused, adding that the party remains “united, strong, and determined”.
