Tension escalated on Saturday in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, after angry residents reportedly invaded a political rally organised by the City Boy Movement (CBM) in support of the re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The rally, which attracted a large crowd of supporters and residents, was disrupted when a group of aggrieved individuals stormed the venue and allegedly carted away empowerment materials meant for distribution to participants.
Meanwhile, the situation quickly turned rowdy as the crowd surged forward, with many people seen running helter-skelter in an attempt to avoid the chaos that followed.
A video obtained by Afrika Eyes showed a massive crowd gathered at the venue while the situation rapidly deteriorated into confusion.
In the footage, several individuals could be seen carrying away various empowerment items, while others scrambled in different directions amid the commotion.
The Movement was organised by the City Boy Movement to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition in the 2027 general election.
According to those present, the entire venue became extremely rowdy as people struggled to gain access to the empowerment materials.
Several individuals were seen leaving the venue carrying different items believed to have been meant for distribution during the programme.
In the video, people could also be seen pushing through the crowd while others hurriedly moved away from the centre of the gathering as the situation intensified.
Although no immediate casualties were reported as of the time of filing this report, the disruption forced organisers to struggle to regain control of the event.
