The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Obidient Movement have rejected the results of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, calling for a total cancellation over alleged violence and manipulation that they claim marred the process.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, described the outcome of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, as “not just a political setback, but a brazen assault on the foundation of our democracy.”
Tanko said the Obidient Movement and its supporters had thrown their full weight behind the ADC candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, mobilising voters in pursuit of what he called “the vision of a new Nigeria.”
“As many of you know, the Obidient Movement and indeed fellow Nigerians threw their full weight behind the ADC candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, inspired by the vision of a new Nigeria,” he said.
“Our supporters were mobilised with unprecedented passion, creating a powerful coalition for change.”
He alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission contributed to voter apathy by dividing polling units without adequate notice, making it difficult for voters to locate their polling units.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission contributed to voter apathy by dividing polling units without informing voters, making it difficult for many to locate their polling units,” Tanko said. “Many left in frustration without voting, resulting in about 7% turnout.”
Tanko added that Peter Obi’s intervention boosted participation, noting that the former presidential candidate urged his supporters to vote for the ADC.
“Mr. Peter Obi showed his capacity once again with the love of Nigerians who came out to support our candidate within a short time of joining the ADC,” he stated. “His call to supporters explained the marginal increase in voter turnout compared to previous FCT council elections.”
He further alleged that the declared victory of the All Progressives Congress was not earned at the polling units.
“We were clearly ahead in the polls. The will of the people was undeniable. Yet what we witnessed was a criminal subversion of that will,” Tanko said.
“The declared victory of the All Progressives Congress was not earned at the polling units but manufactured through a campaign of violence, intimidation and brazen manipulation.”
The group, therefore, demanded the immediate cancellation of the election and the conduct of a fresh poll.
“We call for the complete cancellation of the exercise and the conduct of a credible election that truly reflects the will of the people,” he added.
