The Chief of Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, on Wednesday declared that any personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria caught planning or attempting to displace the current democratic government in Nigeria will face the full wrath of the law.
Aneke, an Air Marshal, also described the recent alleged coup plot against the President Bola Tinubu-led government by some military personnel as something “shameful, shocking, and wholly reprehensible”.
The top military officer, who stated this at a strategic meeting with the Commanders currently ongoing at the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force, Abuja, insisted that the major role of the military is to support the civil authorities.
The number of military officers and civilians arrested in connection with the last year’s October planned coup has risen to above 40, with the family of those involved calling for leniency and fair trial.
Speaking before the meeting went into a closed-door session, Aneke said, “I unequivocally condemn recent revelations that plans were made by certain individuals to subvert democracy and violently take over the government.
“Such actions are shameful, shocking, and wholly reprehensible. Any perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law. The Nigerian Air Force remains loyal to the Constitution and the democratically elected government of the day.
“Accordingly, commanders are reminded of their responsibility to maintain unity and cohesion within the ranks while checking all forms of indiscipline and unlawful activity.”
