An outspoken senator from Bauchi State has raised serious concerns over reported United States airstrikes carried out on Nigerian soil without the knowledge of the National Assembly.
Senator Abdul Ningi, who represents Bauchi Central, told his colleagues that the Senate was never informed about any foreign military operation within Nigeria’s borders.
He warned that such actions could weaken the country’s sovereignty and expose it to future external interference.
The lawmaker spoke during plenary on Tuesday while raising a matter of privilege. He said the alleged strike created security and constitutional questions that must be addressed immediately.
According to him, Nigeria should not allow any foreign power to carry out military action without proper approval and transparency.
Ningi called on the Senate leadership to summon the nation’s service chiefs. He said they must explain how the operation happened and why lawmakers were kept in the dark.
“The Senate should order the service chiefs to brief the Senate on territorial integrity of the country,” he said.
He argued that no foreign country has the authority to bomb locations in Nigeria, even under the excuse of fighting terrorism. He added that such actions amount to a breach of the constitution and undermine the role of the legislature in matters of national security.
The controversy followed a public statement credited to United States President Donald Trump, who announced that American forces had carried out airstrikes in Nigeria.
He described the operation as “a powerful and deadly strike” against terrorists linked to ISIS operating in the northwest region.
The strikes reportedly targeted camps in Sokoto State. Nigerian authorities later confirmed that intelligence support was provided for the operation, though details of Senate involvement or approval were not disclosed.
