Bola Tinubu has removed the name of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from its wanted list following the intervention of prominent South-West traditional rulers.
His spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, disclosed this in a statement, saying arrangements had been concluded for Igboho’s return to Nigeria after Yoruba monarchs appealed to Bola Tinubu on his behalf.
According to Koiki, the intervention involved respected rulers, including the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao.
Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, after a raid on his Ibadan residence by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army over allegations of arms stockpiling.
The operation followed his agitation against attacks on farmers by armed herdsmen in the South-West.
During the raid, three of his aides were killed while 13 others were arrested.
Igboho later escaped to the Benin Republic but was arrested in Cotonou on July 19, 2021, while attempting to travel to Germany.
He was detained for over a year before his release in March 2022.
Koiki said Igboho has now been officially cleared and may return home at any time, describing the development as a major relief for the Yoruba people.
Meanwhile, critics are questioning Sunday Igboho’s release, arguing it’s inconsistent with the government’s stance on separatist movements.
Some critics, like Naja’atu Mohammed, a former director in President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council, have pointed out the perceived disparity in treatment, citing the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
