RIVERS MONARCHS FORM PEACE COMMITTEE TO MEDIATE POLITICAL CRISIS BETWEEN FUBARA, WIKE

OIP 24 10

The Rivers state council of traditional rulers has constituted a nine-member peace committee to mediate in the ongoing political crisis rocking the state.

The political crisis stems from a protracted feud between Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The committee, announced in a press release on Wednesday, is chaired by Suanu T. Y. Baridam, with Eze Nwachukwu Nnam Obi as co-chairman.

The statement was signed by Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, the Eze Oha Apara IV of Apara Kingdom and chairman of the Rivers state council of traditional rulers.

The committee is tasked with engaging relevant stakeholders to propose lasting solutions to restore peace in Rivers.

Other members include Uchechukwu Isaiah-Elikwu, Leslie Eke, Samuel Amaechi, Felix Otuwarikpo, Onyekachi Amaonwu, Agolia Aboko, and Eze Nwankwo Nwankwo. Darlington Owiriwa will serve as secretary.

The council appealed to supporters of all parties, social media users, and the general public to exercise restraint in their comments and avoid actions that could inflame tensions or lead to a breach of the peace.

Wike began campaigning against Fubara’s re-election in December after accusing the governor of reneging on an agreement they both signed before President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule in Rivers state.

Members of the Rivers state house of assembly, aligned with Wike, had also accused Fubara of spending state funds without approval.
