These governors and politicians defecting to the APC is not necessarily an endorsement of Tinubu government’s performance.
It’s about their own survival and re-election.
At the state level, politics is less about ideology and more about resources. Party structures control funding, logistics, mobilization, and grassroots machinery. Opposition parties in Nigeria today are financially weak, unstable, and can’t seriously fund elections the way incumbents need, especially with 2027 expected to very tense and expensive.
Joining APC is the only way to control party fund allocations and structures. It’s the only way to access campaign funds and logistics. You risk too much opposition pressure from APC if you let someone else with more money than you have campaign against you. It’s simply cheaper to control APC’s money than to fight against it.
This is not about helping Tinubu win reelection in 2027. In fact, watch what will happen during the election. Many of these politicians will be accused of anti-party activities.
Leaving party funds and structures in the hands of opposition groups will force governors to spend heavily just to counter them, which is money they don’t have, especially with weak party backing.
Will this help Tinubu in their states? Only if the voters are already supporting Tinubu, else, not so much.
