Commercial vehicle operations in some designated places in Enugu State have been restricted to the state’s newly-built bus terminals.
The measure, according to an announcement by the state Ministry of Transportation, was aimed at decongesting the affected areas.
The terminals are located at Holy Ghost Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, Garriki, Abakpa, and Nsukka.
They were built by Gov Mbah as part of measures to bring sanity to some often congested locations in the state. The relocation, it was gathered, took effect from Tuesday.
According to the announcement, “All transport operators should load and offload passengers strictly within the designated terminals. All access roads within and around the terminals must be kept clear of vehicle parking to ensure smooth traffic flow and orderly operations.”
The ministry advised passengers to enter the terminals to board their designated vehicles, as roadside loading and boarding would no longer be permitted.
The government warned that any violation of the directive would attract enforcement actions, adding that the measure was aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and overall transport management across the state”.
“The Enugu State Government expressed appreciation for the cooperation of all transport operators, stakeholders, and members of the public as the new directive takes effect,” said the ministry.
Meanwhile, a town planner, Mr Tochukwu Nzekwe, has commended the state for the directive.
He said, “It will eliminate the human-created gridlocks at Holy Ghost, Abakpa, Nsukka and other affected areas. Our drivers behave like uncultured people by loading and offloading passengers on the road, not minding the adverse consequences their actions pose to other road users. With this development, we expect some moment of relief at the affected areas.”
In another development, the government of Enugu State has said it will commence the deregistration of all unregistered and unapproved estate developments across the state.
The Managing Director of the Enugu State Geographic Information System Service (ENGIS), Mr Chiwetalu Nwatu, stated this during a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) and the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP).
It was gathered that the meeting was convened to address accumulated challenges in estate development, land administration, and physical planning in Enugu State.
According to Nwatu, the measure was part of the government’s efforts towards sanitising the real estate and land development sector and restore order to land administration in the state.
“The state government has directed an immediate halt to the advertisement and promotion of all unregistered and unapproved estates,” Nwatu said, adding that “developers and advertising platforms found promoting unapproved estates will face sanctions.”
Nwatu commended Gov Peter Mbah for his commitment to institutional reforms and orderly urban development, describing the establishment of ENGIS “as a critical intervention that has strengthened regulation, transparency, and accountability in the land sector”.
