NIGERIA’S INSECURITY WOULD HAVE BEEN SOLVED IF OBI WAS SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT — DATTI BABA-AHMED

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has declared that Peter Obi would have provided clear solutions towards ending the spate of insecurity across Nigeria.

In a video shared on X, he lamented the worsening insecurity in Nigeria, accusing Bola Tinubu of failing to deal with the issue, despite his promises to Nigerians to give it priority.

Obi’s running mate stressed that he was ashamed of the glaring cluelessness shown by Tinubu towards the security crisis since he stole the presidency.

Baba-Ahmed said Nigeria’s security crisis was not about manpower but corruption within the system. He insisted that the Nigerian Police, if freed from political interference and graft, could defeat terrorism and banditry without additional forces.

“It is not about numbers. It is about reducing corruption in the war against insecurity itself. The entire amount budgeted for security in this current budget—how much of that is actually going into the war, and how much is going into the 2027 elections? How much is going into private pockets? That is the problem,” he said.

He argued that eliminating corruption and political interests would empower the police to restore security swiftly. “Remove the Nigerian armed forces. The Nigerian police alone can wipe out insecurity and banditry in two months. Remove that corruption, remove political interest, give them all the support they want. They will do it,” he added.

He reaffirmed that Obi was experienced enough to lead the country, having governed Anambra for two terms, dismissing insinuations that he had nothing to offer the country.

His comments came a day after Tinubu directed the Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force to recruit tens of thousands of new personnel, including 20,000 additional police officers, bringing the total intake to 50,000.
