The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has officially commenced the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution under “Tranche B” of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering programme – an initiative of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) aimed at bridging Nigeria’s metering gap and eliminating estimated billing. The Free Prepaid Meter Rollout marks a significant stride in EEDC’s commitment to service transparency, customer satisfaction, and energy accountability across the South-East region.

According to the Group Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the exercise, (Free Prepaid Meter Rollout) which kicked off on November 2, 2025, is targeted at unmetered customers on Service Band “A” feeders within the company’s network coverage.

“A total of 13,335 customers of EEDC and its subsidiaries will benefit from this phase of the metering programme, beginning with the Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise,” Ezeh stated.

He emphasized that the Free Prepaid Meter Rollout, MAF, initiative is fully funded by NERC, and therefore, customers are not required to make any payment for either the meters or their installation.

“These meters and their installation are free, and customers are cautioned against making any form of payment to meter installers or succumbing to extortion or inducement,” Ezeh warned.

He explained that the “Tranche B” rollout reinforces EEDC’s resolve to enhance billing transparency and promote customer trust through fair and accurate energy measurement. Customers are also encouraged to verify and update their contact details by visiting the nearest EEDC Customer Service Unit.

“Our team will be reaching out to customers using the information provided in their existing profiles,” Ezeh added.

Ezeh recalled that EEDC successfully completed “Tranche A” of the MAF metering programme earlier this year, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered. He assured that after the current phase, Band “B” customers would be next in line, as part of efforts to systematically close the metering gap across the distribution network.

He further appealed for patience from customers who may not be captured under the ongoing phase, revealing that another metering initiative – the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DISREP) – is set to commence soon.

In his cautionary remarks, Ezeh advised against meter bypassing, energy theft, or tampering, stressing that such acts not only defeat the purpose of the programme but also undermine efforts toward operational efficiency and revenue protection.

“Customers should avoid engaging in meter bypass or energy theft, and are encouraged to report any such illegal activity through our official channels,” he said.

For further inquiries, customers can reach EEDC via its Call Centre on 02084700100 or WhatsApp lines 0707 461 0095 and 0707 461 0088.

The Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) is a NERC-backed initiative, financed by all distribution companies across Nigeria, to procure and distribute prepaid meters free of charge to electricity customers. The fund is managed by an independent administrator under the supervision of NERC to ensure transparency and accountability in its implementation.
