President Bola Tinubu on Monday reportedly sent a high-level delegation to meet with officials of the United Kingdom (UK) Ministry of Justice to discuss the case of embattled Nigerian former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ayekooto Akindele, who posted the video of their arrival in the UK on his Facebook page, said the delegation includes Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi.

The delegation was received at the Nigerian High Commission in London by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Ekweremadu has been detained in Britain since March 2023 for alleged organ harvesting.

The former Senate President and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested by the London Metropolitan Police and charged with allegedly trafficking one David Nwanini with the aim of harvesting his kidney.

In May 2023, the former Nigerian Deputy Senate President was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison for his role in an organ-trafficking plot by an Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in London.

Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a “middleman” doctor, Obinna Obeta, were found guilty of conspiring to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man from Lagos to the UK to exploit him for a kidney transplant for their daughter, Sonia.

The arrangement failed. Ekweremadu received a sentence of nine years and eight months, while Beatrice was jailed for four years and six months, and Dr. Obeta for ten years.

In January 2025, Beatrice Ekweremadu was released from prison and returned to Nigeria, but her husband remains in prison.
