President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, as Chairman of a high-powered presidential committee mandated to revamp training institutions for security agencies across the country — a task many analysts have described as one of the most crucial national security reforms in recent years.

The appointment, which was announced during the 152nd meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in Governor Mbah’s growing influence within the federal administration. The meeting was chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, with President Tinubu in attendance.

Announcing the development via a statement shared on his social media handles, Vice President Shettima disclosed that the committee has been given a one-month deadline to submit its recommendations to the presidency.

The statement reads in part:
“Today, I chaired the 152nd meeting of the National Economic Council held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting was graced by my boss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who presented a proposal to NEC on the revamp of training institutions for security agencies in the country.

“Following the President’s proposal, NEC constituted a committee chaired by the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, to oversee the process of overhauling training institutions for security agencies across the country.

“The committee has a one-month period to produce a blueprint for the renovation of training institutions for the Nigeria Police Force and sister agencies nationwide.”

The appointment, sources say, underscores the president’s growing confidence in Mbah’s proven capacity for institutional transformation and strategic reforms. Thursday’s NEC meeting was also the first the Enugu governor attended as a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Observers believe the decision to entrust Mbah with such a sensitive national task reflects recognition of his success in reviving moribund assets in Enugu State — including the revitalization of the Hotel Presidential, the International Conference Center, the Niger Gas plant, among others.

Security experts have since hailed the move as a bold step by President Tinubu to align Nigeria’s security training infrastructure with modern realities, with Governor Mbah expected to lead what could become a blueprint for sustainable institutional reform across the nation’s defense and policing systems.
