The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the defection of Governor Peter Mbah from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP while speaking in an interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday said the party was disappointed by Mbah’s action.

According to Ologunagba, while people including party leaders have the right to make their personal and political decisions as the case may be, there are also consequences to these actions.

He called on PDP governors serving in various states of the country to ensure that they take their roles as leaders of the opposition party seriously – to the benefit of the people who voted them in.

“The PDP is utterly disappointed by those actions, having regard to what we know behind the scenes. But having said that, people have a right to decide what they want to do; the consequences can follow,” Ologunagba said.

Further alleging the activities of mole within the PDP, the party spokesperson said the forthcoming national convention scheduled to take place in November in Ibadan, Oyo State will address some of these issues.

Ologunagba said that, at the convention, the party leadership will make efforts towards reviving the spirit of oneness among members and work towards repositioning the PDP for future elections.

“I compare this to a situation where you have a madman in a China shop; you must be methodical, you must be deliberate in trying to exit that.

“As a party, we are focused on the Nigerian people; we don’t want to put too much premium on the individual because it is not based on individuals; it is based on the people, and that is our strength,” he said.

He added that with the convention, a new National Working Committee which will steer the affairs of the PDP in the right direction will emerge.

He also stated that securing a strong party structure precedes plans for candidacy as the PDP is now focused on creating a solid foundation which Nigerians would be proud of.

“So, that’s what we want to do — create a very solid foundation, find the people who have character, integrity, and capacity and courage to run the affairs of the party so that Nigerians can then have a choice,” he said.
