Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has announced plans to set up a special committee to investigate mounting complaints over alleged excessive taxation across the state.
Mbah made this known on Tuesday during an ongoing media chat shortly after his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor said he had already met with the leadership of the state’s revenue agency to get clarity on the situation.
“I have had cause to interface with the chairman, Board of Internal Revenue Service to understand what is going on,” he stated.
He revealed that contrary to the widespread perception of increased taxes, the agency insists it has only automated revenue collection.
“The IRS chairman told me that they’ve not increased tax in the state. Rather, they’ve automated the system, stopped cash collections and automated the system in all sectors, including the transportation sector,” Mbah explained.
Mbah, however, acknowledged the growing outcry from market traders and residents who insist they are being overburdened by the current taxation structure.
To address the concerns, he announced the formation of a probe committee that will include key stakeholders.
“With the persistence of this complaint of heavy taxation, I have decided to set up a committee which will include market men and women. They will give me firsthand information of what is happening, and what they submit will determine the next line of action,” the governor declared.
The development is expected to usher in a critical review of the state’s tax system to ensure transparency, fairness, and relief for the people of Enugu.
