Governor Greg Abbott of Texas State in the United States has urged residents to immediately report any cleric or individual attempting to enforce Sharia law, following a viral video of an Islamic preacher in Houston demanding shopkeepers stop selling alcohol, pork, and lottery tickets.
Reacting on his official X handle, Abbott doubled down on his anti-Sharia stance, boasting of laws already signed in Texas to criminalize what he called “Sharia compounds” and any attempt to impose Islamic compliance in the state.
“I signed laws that BAN Sharia Law and Sharia Compounds in Texas,” the governor wrote.
He added: “No business & no individual should fear fools like this. If this person, or ANYONE, attempts to impose Sharia compliance, report it to local law enforcement or the Texas Dept. of Public Safety.”
The video, which has been widely circulated online, shows a Muslim cleric addressing shop owners in the Houston area, insisting they must abide by Islamic injunctions prohibiting alcohol, pork, and gambling.
Abbott’s fiery response comes amid heightened tensions in the U.S. over the place of religion in public life, immigration, and security, with Texas often at the forefront of conservative pushes against what its Republican leaders describe as creeping extremism.
Responding to the Governor’s comment, a journalist, Amy Mek, said: “I broke this story weeks ago and you stayed silent. Now that others have picked it up and it’s being amplified, you’re only speaking out because you’ve been backed into a corner.”
An X user, Laura Loomer, said: ”The fact that jihadists are going door to door in Texas trying to impose Sharia Law in Texas is a testament to the lack of GOP leadership in Texas.
“The biggest mistake the GOP ever made was allowing for George W. Bush to get away with proclaiming “we are not at war with Islam” in the days after 9/11/01.
“We actually are. And until the GOP wakes up to that, nothing is going to change.”
Another X, Joseph wrote: “NO Greg…you hunt down criminals and throw them the hell out of Texas or lock them up.
“You don’t “fill out a report” and nothing ever happens. HUNT their asses down and apply the damn law. Its all over the damn news and social media on video for God’s sake. Get off your ass and hunt them down.”
“Thought Bible is also against gambling and alcohol,” another user, Big Alpha, said.
“Yes it is but you shouldn’t force it down people’s throat they are all adults and they know what they are doing,” another X user added.
