INEC PRESENTS CERTIFICATE OF RETURN TO BY-ELECTION WINNERS

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Thursday, presented Certificates of Return to senators-elect and members-elect of the House of Representatives who emerged victorious in the by-elections held on August 16.

The certificates were handed over on Thursday at the INEC headquarters by different National Commissioners.

Among the recipients were Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, elected senator for Anambra South, and Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress, who won the Edo Central Senatorial District.

Also presented with certificates were five newly elected members of the House of Representatives.

They include Omosede Igbinedion of the APC, who won in the Ovie North East and Ovie South West Federal Constituency of Edo State; Mukhtar Rabi’u Garki of the APC, representing Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State; and Fidelix Bagudu of the APC, elected for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.

Others were Adesola Ayoola-Elegbeji of the APC, who emerged from the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State; and Fola Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party, representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State.

Meanwhile, for the state Houses of Assembly, certificates will be presented to members-elect at the state offices by Resident Electoral Commissioners today (Friday) at 11 am.

The constituencies are Ganye State Constituency of Adamawa State; Onitsha North 1 State Constituency of Anambra State; and Basawa and Zaria/Kewaye State Constituencies of Kaduna State.

Others are Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa State constituencies of Kano State; Okura State Constituency of Kogi State; Munya State Constituency of Niger State and Karim Lamido 1 State Constituency of Taraba State.

Results were successfully declared in all but one constituency; the Kaura Namoda South State Constituency in Zamfara State remains inconclusive.

In the aftermath of the by-elections, parties expressed divergent views. The APC secured 12 constituencies, APGA two, while the PDP and NNPP each claimed one.

The African Democratic Congress criticised the process, alleging voter intimidation and corruption. The APC celebrated the results as a strong endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, while the PDP accused INEC of undermining the electoral process, calling the conduct a serious blow to Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
