CONTRIBUTE TO NIGERIA’S GROWTH – TINUBU CHARGES DIASPORA NIGERIANS
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to contribute their skills, expertise, and resources to Nigeria’s development, stressing that national progress requires active participation from citizens both at home and in the Diaspora.
Speaking at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in Japan on the sidelines of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), President Tinubu encouraged the Diaspora to return home and invest in the country’s economic transformation.
“I am happy to listen to you. I’m happy to report that many of our people are returning home. Yes, for economic reasons, some people might decide to stay away; it’s a fundamental right of the individual, but for the economic growth and opportunity available in Nigeria, don’t stay away. Your contribution is very much needed. If you stay away, who will build it?” Tinubu asked.
The President highlighted the progress his administration has made in key areas, including passport issuance, investment reforms, healthcare infrastructure, and business competitiveness. He also urged the Diaspora to act as ambassadors for Nigeria abroad, projecting a positive image of the country.
“National development cannot be left to the government alone; it requires a shared sense of responsibility between citizens at home and those abroad. If we don’t join hands and work together, then we’ve lost the hope of being the leaders we are supposed to be,” Tinubu said.
During the session, the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Enoh, and the Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, provided insights into government programmes and achievements.
Members of the Nigerian community, including professionals, entrepreneurs, and students, expressed appreciation for the meeting and pledged support for initiatives aimed at national development.
Mr. Emeka Ebogota, President of the Nigerian Union in Japan, commended President Tinubu for engaging the Diaspora and affirmed the union’s commitment to supporting the administration’s efforts.
Other notable attendees included John Ologbotsere, a Japanese national award winner for electrotechnical standardisation, and prominent Nigerian businesspeople, doctors, and investors.
Senior government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, ministers of key portfolios, and top private sector leaders, were also present.
President Tinubu concluded by reiterating that Nigeria is on the rise and that every citizen, at home or abroad, has a role to play in building a stronger, more prosperous nation.
