TINUBU, POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS UNDERPAID, PRESIDENT EARNS N1.5 MONTHLY – FG

The Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Shehu, has called for the review of the salaries of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ministers, and other political office holders.

According to Shehu, Tinubu earns N1.5 million monthly while ministers earn less than N1 million. He added that these salaries have remained unchanged since 2008.

Citing the increasing cost of living, Shehu noted that their salaries are inadequate and outdated.

“You are paying the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria N1.5m a month, with a population of over 200 million people. Everybody believes that it is a joke.

“You cannot pay a minister less than ₦1m per month since 2008 and expect him to put in his best without necessarily being involved in some other things. You pay either a CBN governor or the DG ten times more than you pay the President,” said Shehu.

His remarks have elicited responses from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who have kicked against the review of the salaries of political office holders.

The NLC noted that the move to review the salaries of political office holders ignores the country’s worsening inequality.
