ABURE LP FACTION TO DRAG INEC TO COURT IF EXCLUDED FROM AUGUST
16 BYE ELECTION
The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that any attempt to conduct the August 16, 2025, by-election without its candidates’ names and logo on the ballot papers will trigger a legal battle that could nullify the entire exercise.
In a statement, yesterday, by the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Obiora Ifoh, the party accused INEC of “gambling with the nation’s resources” and acting “for interests that are anti-democratic.”
He urged Nigerians to prevail on the Prof. Mahmood Yakubu-led Commission to uphold the Constitution and the Electoral Act, warning against wasting taxpayers’ money on a process vulnerable to court reversal.
The party vowed that it would defend its image and reputation against any attempt to undermine it.
IN another development, INEC has announced the commencement of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Lagos State.
According to the Commission, the online registration process will begin on August 18, 2025, while the physical biometric capturing will start on August 25, 2025 and run till August 30, 2026.
The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Ayobami Salami, who spoke, yesterday, warned that underage registration and multiple registrations would attract penalties, and offenders would be prosecuted.
He said that eligible citizens are expected to bring their National Identification Numbers (NIN) or any other national means of identification to ensure their true identities, adding that the Commission is committed to ensuring the integrity of the process.
Salami also emphasised the importance of the media in promoting the exercise and ensuring its success, calling on them to help disseminate information to the public.
