ATIKU HOLDS OFF ADC MEMBERSHIP CARD COLLECTION AS APC GOVERNORS ‘PLOT DEFECTION’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has delayed his formal entry into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he awaits the anticipated defection of several governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition party.

Atiku, who recently resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party after prolonged internal disputes, was scheduled to receive his ADC membership card in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State, on August 6.

It is understood that the event has now been shifted indefinitely.

ADC Adamawa State chairman, Shehu Yohana, confirmed the delay, revealing that Atiku informed him the ceremony might now hold in mid-August or even September.

“He said he was waiting for some APC governors who are planning to join ADC before his event in Jada,” Yohana said.

Party sources, however, say the postponement may also be linked to a growing tussle for control of ADC structures between Atiku’s camp and allies of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. A senior ADC figure alleged that Obi’s movement had tightened its grip on the party in the South, complicating Atiku’s presidential ambitions.

There are also indications that the ADC has been holding discreet talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan over a possible 2027 run.

One chieftain claimed Jonathan had met coalition leaders three times and responded positively, ruling out a return to the PDP due to the party’s internal crisis.

Asked about a potential automatic ticket for Jonathan, the source said, “When we get to the bridge, we will know how to cross it.”

Meanwhile, ADC national spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi declined to confirm details.

“ADC is open to everybody and we look forward to having every Nigerian who is ready to rescue the country from this hardship,” he said.
