PDP MOVES TO OUST WIKE OVER ANTI-PARTY ACTIVITIES
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has opened formal proceedings to remove Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from its membership.
The move comes amid accusations that Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and once a leading figure in the PDP, has acted against the party’s interests since joining President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.
Allegations of Disloyalty
Party officials say Wike has crossed a line by working too closely with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). They point to public appearances alongside APC leaders, statements that undercut PDP positions, and even gifts reportedly given to judges, actions they call “anti‑party conduct.”
By accepting a ministerial appointment in an APC‑led government, Wike has, in their view, put personal ambition ahead of party unity.
Disciplinary Committee Set Up
Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi confirmed on July 18 that the PDP has formed a six‑member panel to review petitions against Wike.
The committee will gather evidence, hear Wike’s side, and recommend sanctions, ranging from suspension to full expulsion. Wike has been invited to present his defence before the panel finalises its report.
Voices from Within
“Serving in a rival administration while still clinging to PDP membership is unacceptable,” said Robinson Ewor, the acting PDP chairman in Rivers State. National stalwarts like Senator Olabode George have also spoken out, warning that Wike’s behaviour threatens the party’s cohesion just as it prepares for local and national elections.
Wike’s Response
As of this writing, Wike has not issued a public statement on the disciplinary action. His close allies in Rivers State have urged calm, arguing that the party’s top brass is overreacting. But many rank‑and‑file members worry that the standoff will deepen internal divisions at a critical time.
Why It Matters
Nyesom Wike commands a strong political base in the oil‑rich Niger Delta and wields influence among key interest groups. His potential expulsion could spark protests or even a mass walkout of supporters, weakening the PDP ahead of the 2027 polls.
At the same time, backers of the disciplinary move believe enforcing party rules is essential to present a united front against the APC.
