SEE HOW MUCH FG WILL BE PAYING BUHARI’S FAMILY

Following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, new information has emerged on what the Nigerian government will provide for his surviving family especially his widow as prescribed by law.

These benefits reflect Nigeria’s tradition of supporting the families of former leaders, particularly those who served as both military and civilian heads of state.

Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital on July 13, 2025, left a national servicie and his family now becomes eligible for certain federal benefits under the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and Other Ancillary Matters) Act.

Monthly and yearly allowance
According to the Act, Buhari’s widow is entitled to ₦350,000 every month, which amounts to ₦4.2 million annually. This allowance is meant strictly for personal upkeep and day-to-day living expenses.

Education and family support
The law also provides ₦1 million annually, paid in four instalments of ₦250,000 each quarter to assist with family support and the education of Buhari’s children, especially up to the university level. This is part of the effort to ease the financial burden on families of former leaders.

Free medical treatment abroad
One of the most significant perks is fully funded healthcare abroad. The Federal Government will handle all medical expenses incurred outside Nigeria for Buhari’s surviving family, removing any financial stress linked to health concerns.

Government-Funded Vacation
The family is also entitled to a 30-day annual vacation at the government’s expense. This can be taken either within Nigeria or overseas, giving the widow some flexibility in how she chooses to spend the time.

Furnished official residence
In addition, the government will provide a fully furnished five-bedroom house, with the location left to the family’s discretion. This benefit ensures that the family has stable housing without having to worry about cost or logistics.

To top it off, the government will also cover the cost of one direct telephone line, which will be paid for entirely by public funds.

Conditions and legal limitations
It’s important to note that these benefits are legally restricted to Buhari’s widow alone. If she chooses to remarry, all entitlements under the law will cease immediately. This condition is clearly outlined in the Act and applies to all former leaders’ spouses.
