ENUGU LP DEFIES ABURE FACTION, BACKS OBI’S ALLIANCE WITH ADC
The Enugu chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has officially declared support for the opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development comes amid internal tensions within the LP following threats from a faction led by Julius Abure to sanction Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, over his role in the new opposition coalition.
In a letter dated July 3, 2025, and signed by Kingsley Ugwu, LP’s acting state chairman, the party said it is embracing the coalition to achieve a better Nigeria.
“We are pleased to announce that Labour Party Enugu State has officially embraced the coalition to contribute to the movement for achieving a better Nigeria, working together with our principal, Peter Obi,” the letter reads.
Ugwu noted that the decision to align with the coalition is rooted in the party’s desire for unity and collaboration in the interest of national development.
“As part of this effort, we are excited to announce that we can now begin advertising the ADC agenda across all 160 wards in Enugu State,” he added.
He said the coalition is intended to promote a shared vision for a better Nigeria and foster community engagement on issues that matter to citizens.
“We believe that by working together, we can build a brighter future for our state and our nation,” Ugwu stated.
On Wednesday, Obi and several prominent Nigerian political figures were spotted at the unveiling of ADC as the platform of the opposition coalition, held in Abuja.
Among those present were John Oyegun, the former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Atiku Abubakar, the former vice-president; Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior; Aminu Tambuwal, the ex-governor of Sokoto; and former David Mark, the former senate president, who is now the interim national chairman of the ADC.
