NIGERIAN ARMY MARKS 162 YEARS OF SERVICE, REFLECTS ON LEGACY

The Nigerian Army has marked its 162nd anniversary with a solemn celebration of its rich history, achievements, and commitment to national and global peace.

Speaking during the commemoration held at Giginya Jumaat mosque in Sokoto, the special guest of honour, General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, who was represented by the Chief of Staff Headquarters 8 Division, Brigadier General Abubakar Suru recounted the evolution of the Army since its inception in 1863, when Lieutenant John Glover of the Royal Navy formed a local militia group known as the “Glover Hausas,” made up of 18 indigenous recruits from Northern Nigeria.

This formation, he said, laid the foundation for what would become the modern Nigerian Army.

He said over the years, the Army transitioned through various phases from the Glover Hausas to the West African Frontier Force, then to the Nigerian Regiment, and later to the Nigerian Military Force, before becoming the Nigerian Army that we know today.

The GOC emphasized that the Nigerian Army has played a vital role in promoting global peace and security ranging from participation in both World Wars and numerous international peace support missions.

“The essence of today is to sit down and take stock, to reflect on how far we have come and where we are headed. It is a time to re-plan and re-strategize so that we can remain competitive and effective among the armies of the world”

This year’s Nigerian Army Day celebration is themed: ‘Developing the Soldiers First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army Transformation Drive’ underscores the Army’s renewed focus on the welfare, training, and motivation of its personnel as a pathway to institutional growth and operational excellence.

He called on all personnel of the Nigerian Army to remain dedicated, loyal, and disciplined in the discharge of their constitutional duties.

“It is my prayer and hope that the Nigerian Army continues to grow in strength and capacity, not only to protect our sovereignty but also to contribute to peacebuilding efforts globally,” he added.
