TINUBU ASKS SUPREME COURT TO DISMISS PDP GOVERNORS’ SUIT ON RIVERS EMERGENCY RULE
President Bola Tinubu has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by 11 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors challenging his declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all state lawmakers.
The decision, announced in April 2025, followed ongoing political unrest in the oil-rich state. Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas as the sole administrator to govern Rivers.
The PDP governors, including Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), argue that the president lacks the authority to suspend elected officials and declare a state of emergency.
Notably, Oborevwori recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu’s party, while Eno has expressed support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, fueling speculation of his potential defection.
Amid the crisis, rumors suggest Fubara may also join the APC, following a reported meeting with Tinubu in London, where the president allegedly mediated talks between Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike.
Former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi claimed the state’s political turmoil centers on money-sharing disputes and 2027 election politics, alleging Tinubu’s involvement.
Amaechi challenged Fubara and Wike to clarify the root of their conflict, asserting it revolves around financial control and political loyalty.
As defections and realignments intensify, the Supreme Court’s ruling on the governors’ suit will significantly impact Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027.
